ELA COMMON CORE STANDARDS The Common Core asks students to read stories and literature, as well as more complex texts that provide facts and background knowledge in areas such as science and social studies. Students will be challenged and asked questions that push them to refer back to what they’ve read. This stresses critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills that are required for success in college, career, and life. .

Language Arts Focus Shifts:  Learning to read * Reading to Learn Using the Houghton-Mifflin Reading Series and grade level literature, we will work on... • Using comprehension strategies to understand narrative and expository text • Multiple genres (Fiction and Non-Fiction) • Word Study • Daily vocabulary development • Guided reading, Independent reading, Universal access • Fluency in June should be 123 correct words per minute • Students will be reading books at their instructional reading level (0.1-12.0) For more information visit: http://www.eduplace.com/rdg/hmr/4/

California Common Core State Standards Mathematics In grade 4, instructional time should focus on three critical areas: (1) Developing understanding and fluency with multi-digit multiplication, and developing understanding of dividing to find quotients involving multi-digit dividends; (2) Developing an understanding of fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers; (3) Understanding that geometric figures can be analyzed and classified based on their properties, such as having parallel sides, perpendicular sides, particular angle measures, and symmetry.

Homework • Homework will be given Monday through Friday nights *Homework Calendar* (except for projects) • Social Studies and Science homework as units are in progress • In addition to written homework, students are to read for 30 minutes every night - including weekends. • Homework should be approximately 40-60 minutes per night.
