  2. What is Anorexia Nervosa? • Anorexia Nervosa is a eating disorder, in where a person is unable or unwilling to maintain a minimal healthy body weight. Which makes people intensely afraid of gaining weight and harbor a distorted perception of body shape and size, as well as, making them limit the amount of food they eat which makes them become dangerously thin.

  3. What Causes it? • Experts don’t quite know what causes anorexia, since eating disorders are complex. However, they say it may be due to the following factors: • Family history (Family member with eating disorder, may be passed down) • Sports that stresses body (Ballet, gymnastics, modeling, etc.) • Stressful life (Divorce, moving towns, or losing a loved one)

  4. What are some symptoms? • Many people with this disorder strongly deny that have a problem, nevertheless, there are symptoms that show very often when your anorexic. For example: • They weigh less than their normal weight • They strictly limit their food (Planned diet) • Exercise very often, even when they are sick • They say and look at themselves as if they were over weight • Vomit often and use laxatives to avoid weight gain

What are some possible complications? • Having anorexia has many health and mental disorders, which include the following: • Kidney damage • Anemia • Bone loss (Makes you weaker) • Heart problems (Abnormal heart rhythm, or heart failure which leads to death) • Absence of menstrual cycles (Females) • Decrease of testosterone (Males) • Mental disorders (Anxiety, depression, personality change, drug abuse, etc.)

  6. What is bulimia Nervosa? • Bulimia Nervosa is a eating disorder as well, but unlike anorexia, it involves eating binges which are followed by unhealthy compensatory behaviors. Also feel loss of control and use laxatives to prevent weight gains.

  7. What causes it? • As anorexia, experts don’t know the main cause of bulimia, but have some possible causes: • Genetics • Being bullied about your weight • Victims of abuse • Cultural factors (Chinese women, Africans, etc.) • Low-self esteem • Competitive sports (Jumping events, model, ballet)

  8. What are the symptoms? • Two major symptoms of bulimia nervosa is binge eating that involves eating enormous amount of food with high quantities of calories, and purging which means after binge eating they feel bloated, guilty, and ashamed. Other symptoms are: • Vomiting after eating • Inflamed throat (Due to acid in the vomit) • Broken blood vessels in eyes • Swollen cheeks

  9. What are some possible complications? • The main complication of bulimia nervosa is death, nevertheless, there are many more such as the following: • Stomach rupture • Loss of minerals • Rotting teeth (Due to acid of the vomit) • Gingivitis • Inflamation of esophagus • Scar on knuckles (By forcing down fist into your throat) • Swelling of salivary glands
