  2. Week 1 Roots: • DICT, DIC, DIT = speak, declare • VEN, VENT = come • DUCT, DUC = lead.

DICT, DIC, DIT = speak, declare • Prediction (n) - Something that foretells the future; a prophecy; a declaration or telling in advance • Dedicate (v) - To set apart for some purpose and esp. for something sacred or serious: devote; to address or inscribe as a compliment • Contradictory (adj) - Inclined to declare or speak against; tending to state the opposite opinion • Dictatorship (n) - A country or form of government where absolute power is exercised by an imperious ruler

  4. VEN, VENT = come • Conventional (adj) - Conforming or adhering to accepted custom, practice, belief or taste; without originality • Venturesome (adj) - Having or showing a disposition to undertake something involving uncertainty or risk • Eventful (adj) - Full of incidents or rich in important occurrences, esp. noteworthy or momentous • Prevention (n) - The act of stopping or keeping something from coming or happening

  5. DUCT, DUC = lead. • Aqueduct (n) - Artificial channel for conducting water over a distance from a remote site • Productive (adj) - Capable of creating by mental or physical effort; fertile; yielding favorable results • Deduce (v) - To trace the course or derivation of; to derive as a conclusion from something known or assumed • Duchess (n) - The wife or widow of a duke; a woman who holds the title of duke in her own right

  6. Your Assignment • Complete the fill-in-the-blank handouts with the vocabulary lists provided. Remember to focus on the roots, as well as the whole word.

  7. Your Homework • Your homework (due Wednesday): Create 15 sentences using the remaining roots. • Use all 12 vocabulary words in a sentence. • Then find one other word that uses each of the roots and make a sentence for those 3 words. • Your sentences must hint at the meaning of the word.

  8. FOR EXAMPLE: • - cracy : Rule by; governed by • Not acceptable: The country was a democracy. • Acceptable: The country aims to strengthen democracy through greater citizen participation in local governance.

  9. Quiz Friday • You will have a vocabulary quiz on Friday. • Bring your note cards to class on Wednesday. I will give you a short amount of time in-class to make note cards in order to help prepare for your quiz

  10. Week 2 Roots • FIN = end • SED, SID, SESS = sit, be still • FER = bear, carry, yield, bring

FIN - end • Confinement (n) – Being enclosed within bounds; state of being limited or restricted • Finality (n) - Conclusiveness or decisiveness; characterized by being settled or complete; something that is an ultimate act or belief • Infinite (adj) - Unlimited; boundless; endless; immeasurably great • Refinery (n) - An establishment for bringing something (as petroleum or sugar) to be free or be separate from impurities

Sed, Sid, Sess – sit; be still • Residential (adj)- Pertaining to the house or place where one lives; characterized by private homes • Obsession (n) - Domination of one's thoughts or feelings by a persistent idea, image or desire • Sedate (adj) - calm or quiet; serenely composed in character or manner • Supersede (v) - To replace in power, position, function, effectiveness or office; to supplant

Fer – bear; carry; yield; bring • Fertilize (v) - To make productive; to cause the process of initiating biological reproduction • Inference (n)- A guess or, speculation • Circumference (n) - Outer boundary, esp. of a circular area; perimeter • Refer (v) - To direct to a person, place for information required; to assign

  16. cern, cer, cre • Ascertain (v) - To find out definitely; to learn with certainty or assurance • Discern (v) - To see or recognize things clearly; to have insight; to discriminate • Discreet (adj) - Careful; diplomatic; judicious in one's speech or conduct • Indiscretion (n) - An act or remark that lacks prudence, good judgment or circumspection

  17. jur/jus • Conjure (v) - To summon, call or bring into existence as if by invocation, spell or magic • Injurious (adj) – Harmful, hurtful, damaging or detrimental to a person, property, reputation or thing • Justification (n) - Fact, circumstance or explanation that is proved right or reasonable • Readjustment (n) - An additional alteration or adaptation to a stated position
