  2. Involvement &/or Engagement • Historically ‘Involvement’ has been a matter of structures, roles, and methods (eg Councils, memberships, surveys,etc) • ‘Engagement’ is new: It is a working partnership entailing robust critical friendship

  3. The Changing Context: Why Bother? • ‘Improvement’ = Clinical Effectiveness,Plus • The Era of Complexity and Long-term Conditions • ‘Plus’ = Active, Informed, Patient Engagement • ‘Involvement’ is a legal duty

  4. Involvement &/or Engagement • ‘Involvement’ informs established arrangements • ‘Engagement’ works at four levels: • Self management (eg the Expert Patient Programme • Continuous Improvement (at the Frontline) • Local Planning & Commissioning (eg Priority Setting) • Governance and Accountability (eg Regulation & Inspection)
