The beginning • BRAF research • Teachers and principals identify “overage population” as #1 factor affecting achievement • Overage students identify “more hands-on activities” and “vo-tech ed” as their top change • The need • Over 2000 overage students in EBR • No options for students who do not pass the LEAP

  3. Other solutions • CKAP program • Large amount of material • No electives • Low passage rate • Moved to high school campuses in 2008-09 • 400 highly overage students moved to four campuses • Separate identity and classes

  4. The concept • A program for overage middle school students that would: • Deliver vo-tech training to overage middle school students to motivate them in their academic work and to give them an alternative path • Provide one-on-one literacy and numeracy tutors • Expose students to different industries • Prepare students for careers and independent living

  5. The coalition • Baton Rouge Area Foundation • Baton Rouge Area Chamber • East Baton Rouge Parish School System • Louisiana Technical College • Greater Baton Rouge Literacy Coalition • Career Builders

  6. The pilot • January 2009 • 40 CKAP students ages 14-18 • 20 from high schools, 20 from Capitol Middle School • Financed by EBRPSS and BRAF • NCCER construction + OSHA 10 certification • Career prep/exploration • One-on-one literacy tutors • Mon., Tues. and Fri.

  9. What We’ve Learned • A diverse coalition is an asset • Coordination is key • Never too late to improve • It doesn’t have to break the bank • Expect growth – not excellence
