Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) 2010 National Report on research excellence – released 31 January 2011 Applies to research undertaken between January 2003 and December 2008 Research assessed using Australian Bureau of Statistics fields of research: 2-digit level – 25 ‘broad’ fields 4-digit level – 157 ‘specific’ fields Griffith submitted research into 22 of the 2-digit fields and 154 of the 157 of the 4-digit fields and was assessed in 80 of these – top 10 for number of fields assessed.

Specific fields in which Griffith scored above world standard Well above world standard (rating of ‘5’): • Quantum Physics; • Dentistry Above world-standard (rating of ‘4’): • Condensed matter physics; • Earth sciences; • Oceanography; • Physical geography and environmental geosciences; • Soil sciences; • Microbiology; • Agricultural and veterinary sciences; • Fisheries sciences; • Nursing; • Urban and regional planning; • Education systems; • Commercial services; • Tourism; • Political science; • Law and legal studies. Griffith was rated at world standard in another 30 fields of research.

  10. Approximately 93 per cent of our 1,400 academic staff perform teaching and research in fields rated world standard or better. Most leading researchers teach – in fact many of these are our best teachers. All academic staff are expected to engage in some form of scholarly activity. This exposes students to leading research currently underway – the results of which will be in textbooks in severalyears time. Research-led teaching is the fundamental difference between a research university and a teaching institution.
