  2. Development • Growth of economy; using one nation’s resources with a combination of outside assistance (through trade) to help the country prosper

  3. Sierra Leone • Revolutionary United Front (RUF) vs. gov’t of President Ahmad Tejan Kabdah • Foday Sankoh= former army corporal and leader of RUF, started rebellion Charles Taylor

  4. El Salvador • 1979-1992 El Salvador was destroyed by a civil war. It was encouraged by the inequality between the poor and the rich. Past President Alfredo Cristiani

  5. History of Sierra Leone: • Independence 1961, resulted in unstable gov’t (in & out military dictatorships)easy for RUF to cause destruction to Pres. Kabdah’s gov’t

  6. History of El Salvador: • A period of relative stability during 1900–1930 • Repressive dictatorship led to civil war between governments • Pressure for reform came from armed resistance from leftists

  8. Civil War effecting Development in Sierra Leone • steps back for the already weak economy • destroyed the backbone of the economy (workers and crops) and corrupted the govtmore unstable

  9. Civil War effecting Development in El Salvador • Economy slowed down during war • After peace signing, poverty rates improved • Economy is growing, and becoming stabilized

  10. Future for Sierra Leone: • Because of the extreme devastation that Sierra Leoneans have faced, recovery will be a gradual process with UN assistance.

  11. Suggestions on How to Improve Conditions in Sierra Leone/ Overcome Barrier • UN can encourage democratic gov’t and keep close eye on it to ensure no corruption • UN aid to rebuild villages that were destroyed by the RUF

  12. Future for El Salvador: • Signed agreements (Mexico, UN) • Trying to increase the growth of economy • Decrease poverty and crime rate • Cutting down on military requirements (war time)

  13. Suggestions on How to Improve Conditions in El Salvador/ Overcome Barrier • To create a stable nation, El Salvador needs to secure its government • Weak, cannot stand alone (always receiving aid) • Improve economy
