  1. PLUMBING MATERIALS

  2. Plumbing 101 • The water is your home consists of two systems: • Water coming in. • Water coming out. The water supplied to your home is under pressure. So much so that is can be pumped throughout your home. The main where your water enters your house has a meter to measure water use as well as a main shut off.

  3. Water softener • When water enters your home, it typically enters a water softener that filters some of the impurities out of the water. • These impurities can include things like iron, calcium, sulphur other trace minerals.

  4. Water heater • Water then goes to either the cold water feed into the house or the hot water heater where it feeds hot water to the house. • Depending on the age of the home the hot water heater can be large or be a tankless type which conserves more energy.

  5. Plumbing Materials • Copper supply pipe. • This material is more common in homes 15 years or older. Copper is used because it doesn’t corrode over time and easier to use than lead. Older homes may have lead pipe which can lead to health problems

  6. PEX pipe • This type of piping is a type of flexible plastic that can be used as supply pipe. It comes in colours (white, red for hot, blue for cold). Advantages is that it doesn’t rattle like copper pipes can.

  7. PVC Pipe • Heavy black plastic pipe that is used for waste water. • PVC pipe is used because it is cheaper than lead and is also resist corrosion caused by wastewater.

  8. Properly venting plumbing • When waste water is flushed down the drain system, it creates pressure. If the venting system is not in place, the water will not drain properly.

  9. Drain traps • Having proper drain traps installed is also important to keep noxious fumes from returning up the drain. These fumes can cause odour problems and well as health problems in the homes that do not have their drain system hooked up properly.
