Texts andOnline resources: • 1)The Writer’s Workplace with Readings • 5/ed by Sandra Scarry and John Scarry can be purchased from the TCC Bookstore or Bill’s Bookstore on Pensacola Street; the text comes wrapped with a QUIA card; do not buy a used text • 2) Plato (no purchase necessary) • 3) QUIA – comes with text

  5. FINAL GRADE COMPUTATION • Timed Paragraph Tests/Mastery Tests 25% • Essay(s) 5% • Class Participation (QUIA online exercises; blackboard quizzes; homework; learning units; discussion board activities) 20% • LAB (PLATO LESSONS) 20% • Final Exam (paragraph & comprehensive) 30%

  6. DISCUSSION BOARD ACTIVITIES: • Students will earn up to 10 pts. for each discussion board activity. There will be 10 activities that will equal one mastery test grade. Students must respond in complete sentences using standard English. Specific directions will be given for each discussion boardactivity.

  9. Using your pacing • Locate in ‘course documents’ • Print the pacing • Contains dates for tests/paragraph • Textbook and QUIA chapters & lessons • Weekly PLATO lessons • Final exam dates

  10. Registration for QUIA/20% • http://books.quia.com • Go to ‘students’ • Click on ‘create new account’ • Use your TCC username and password • Submit form • Enter book key in field labeled ‘enter book key’ • You will find the ‘course code’ in ‘course documents’.

  12. PLATO online lab requirements (20% of final grade) • Located in ‘course documents’ • Web browser • AOL users – minimize AOL and use internet explorer • Pop-up blockers – you may have to minimize pop-up blockers • Fire walls • Plug-ins

  13. Student login for PLATO • PLATO name – student’s last name (lower cased) • Group name – tccenglish • Password – last 4 digits of new TCC identification number

  15. PLATO success tips • Serves as LAB grade = 20% • Lessons have 3 – 4 sections each • Complete all sections for lesson credit • Lessons re-enforce skills • Complete lessons within the week assigned

Tips for success • Review the entire orientation presentation • Read the information found in ‘course information’ and ‘course documents’ • Follow your pacing • Actively participate in class • Use writing and grammar folders • Adhere to due dates found in your syllabus and in the ‘weekly activities’
