  1. 14. The Spirit has Set you Free Romans 8:1-17 p. 1043

  2. Different Lives • Cycling – • In Canada - How to keep warm • In South Africa – How to keep cool ! • Think it’s the same – but it is completely different • Fundamental differences: • Life in the Spirit • Life in the Flesh (sinful nature)

  3. Romans • “Obedience of faith” (1:5) • “faith of Jesus” (3:26) • “faith of Abraham” (4:16) • “Righteoused” by faith (ch. 5) • Jesus undid the damage done by Adam (5:12 ff) • Rhetorical Q&A (ch 6-7): • Getting the Gospel straight • Now the pinnacle of what salvation is about.

  4. 1. Free from Condemnation (v. 1-4) • Begins “no condemnation” ... ends “no separation” • Pick up from 7:6 “new way of the Spirit” • Goes back further – • “Condemnation” from 5:16, 18 comes from Adam. • Become descendants of the second Adam by re-birth. • Condemnation was placed on someone else (3:21-31)

  5. 1. Free from Condemnation (v. 1-4) . . . • Three key things happened: • God sent his Son in the “likeness” of sinful flesh • His son was a “sin offering” • Jesus took our condemnation on himself ! • Freely available to all who “live according to the Spirit” (v 4)

  6. 2. Living in the Spirit (v. 5-11) • Our focus / mindset influences our lives • A stark reality (v. 5): • We live according to the “flesh” or the “Spirit” • How our lives are oriented • An important point (v. 9) • If the Spirit dwells in you, you will not live in the flesh • If you belong to Christ his Spirit dwells in you. • Cannot be “in Christ” and live “in the sinful nature”

  7. 2. Living in the Spirit (v. 5-11) . . . • Mindset of the Spirit is LIFE and PEACE (v. 6) • Biggest part of the Spirit’s work: • Power to live for God ! • NOT giftings (even though they are important) The Spirit who sets us free from the oppression of the sinful nature is the essence of our victory in Christ.

  8. 3. Obligations & Privileges (v. 12-17) • “Obligation” from who we are in Christ. • Identity of “Sonship” • God does not have “slaves” • He offers “adoption to Sonship” • Full share of the inheritance in Jesus. • As Heirs and Sons: • Duties / Privileges are one coherent way of life. • Lives of dignity, integrity and self-respect. • Put to death “the misdeeds of the body” (v 13)

  9. Lessons from life • No Condemnation • The sufficiency of the work of Christ • Orientation of my Life • Guard my Mind and Soul • God’s Word • Prayer • Fellowship • Worship • Hold nothing Back • God wants all of me.

  10. Questions • Share the struggles with how you have battled to accept “no condemnation” as an assurance in your own life. How have you been victorious? • Consider “life in the sinful nature [flesh]” and “life in the Spirit”. How have you been caught on the wrong side of this? How have you had victory? What secrets have you learned? • How do you live out the “obligation” of “Sonship” in your context? How does this change the way you approach daily life? Where have you seen change? What specific areas still need the Spirit’s touch?
