Mastering Scientific Measurements: SI Units and Dimensional Analysis Techniques

This guide introduces the crucial concepts of SI Units and Dimensional Analysis, which are fundamental in scientific measurements. Learn the universal standards of SI Units, including prefixes that denote larger or smaller values. Discover how to employ dimensional analysis as a problem-solving method using conversion factors—ratios derived from the equality of different units. Practice solving real-life problems, such as converting dollars to quarters or calculating the number of seconds in a day. Enhance your understanding of scientific measurements through practical examples and clear explanations.

Presentation Transcript

  1. Using Scientific Measurements SI Units and Dimensional Analysis

  2. SI Units • Universal standard of measurements

  3. SI Units- Prefixes • Used to indicate values larger of smaller than the SI unit

  4. Dimensional Analysis • Method of solving problems using conversion factors • Conversion factor- ratio derived from the equality between two different units that can be used to convert from one unit to the other

  5. Solving Problems Using Dimensional Analysis • quantity sought= quantity given × conversion factor • Multiply all top numbers together • Divide by all bottom numbers Ex. How many quarter are in four dollars? 4 dollars x 4 quarters = 16 quarters 1 dollar

  6. Practice How many seconds are in a day? How many milliliters are in five liters?
