  1. BATA VZW - ASBLBelgian Air Transport Association BATA involvement in an Emission Trading Scheme 19 June 2007 ---------------------------------------------------- Vlaamse klimaatconferentie Stakeholders’ Dialogue

  2. BATA cares about environment • Environment has taken the lead in airlines focus • IATA annual general meeting in Vancouver : air transport industry commits to improve fuel efficiency of the global fleet by 25% by 2020 • The European aviation industry states that inclusion of aviation in the EU ETS is a positive and innovative step • 1st Belgian stakeholders’ dialogue in 02/07 : BATA welcomes ETS as “the best way forward” • BATA members include environment and ETS in their requests to the future government

  3. BATA cares about environment • The example of noise • IATA : over 40 years aviation has reduced noise by 75% • BATA has invested in the most modern fleet, including chapter 4 aircraft - E.g. DHL investment of 1.2 bio € for B757 (phase out B727) • BATA members follow Belgian Authorities instructions • BATA asks operational continuity & legal certainty from the federal government

  4. BATA cares about environment (cont’d) • Greenhouse gas emissions (CO2) • Aviation currently contributes to around 3% of the total CO2 • BATA agrees that growth is expected to increase this part • BATA applies any possible methods to fly economical, as fuel price is primary motivation to decrease consumption, hence CO2 • Aviation is also dependent on technological, operational and infrastructure improvements – 3 pillars of the containment policy • Single European Sky and other operational procedures must be accelerated, as they will decrease CO2 production by 8 to 18%  BATA asks Belgium to push for speeding up SES • BATA supports the inclusion of aviation into an Emission Trading scheme

  5. BATA supports the inclusion of aviation into an Emission Trading scheme • ETS is a part of the containment policy, that has been adopted by the European aviation industry since 2005 • ETS has the potential to become the most feasible, efficient and fair instrument • when focused at as single tool • when compared to taxes and charges • when properly designed • when applying to all flights in Europe whatever carrier nationality • when accompanied by other initiatives (infrastructure, operational and technical)

  6. BATA takes initiatives to reduce CO2 • Operational initiatives are going on • E.g. switching off the APU immediately after engine start • E.g. reduce heating consumption in hangar • STARS into Brussels is a major project(STARS = Standard Arrival Routes)

  7. BATA takes initiatives :STARS into Brussels • Because of altitude restrictions in STARS, airlines landing at Brussels Airport are burning unnecessary fuel. • Avoidable fuel consumption : 12.000 Ton/year • As a consequence : 37.800 Ton CO2/year • Brussels Airlines and BATA have decided to tackle this : together with Belgocontrol, a redesign of the system is currently under study.

  8. STARS into Brussels The landing approach Ideal flight path (3 deg) Actual flight path airport

  9. STARS into Brussels What do we need to progress ? - awareness by all concerned parties - full political support - Belgocontrol working procedures to be redesigned - renogociation of international agreements - full coordination and consultations with stakeholders •  BATA asks the Belgian authorities to support the continuous descent project (STARS into Brussels)

  10. Conclusions • Environmental care is a top priority for BATA • ETS has the potential to meet CO2 control goals • BATA asks for the right design • BATA will continue to take any efficient initiatives  BATA needs support from the Belgian authorities (both Belgian and European level)
