  3. Knights and Land • Knights-soldiers who fought on horseback • Nobles gave fiefs (land) to knights in exchange for protection • Due to the agreement changed terms • Nobles = lords • Knights = vassals

  4. Feudal System • Feudalism-relationship between lords and vassals • LAND FOR PROTECTION

  5. Duties • Lords • Support vassals in battle • Had to be fair • Built castles • Vassals • Fights for the lord • Provide food and shelter for visiting lords • Could accept multiple fiefs • Could become lords

  6. Feudalism Spreads • First created by the Franks • Spread throughout Europe • William the Conqueror • French • Invaded and captured Britain in 1066 • Battle of Hastings • Rewarded knightswith giving them land • Start of feudalism in Britain

  7. ManorSystem • Manor-large estate owned by a knight • 1/4 – 1/3 personal use • Rest divided up • Serfs- tied to the land • Not slaves • Had to have permission to leave • Had lord’s protection • Skilled workers

  8. Manor Lords • Lords controlledeverything • Word was law • Controlled taxes

  9. Women in the Middle Ages • Had fewer rights than men • Still had important roles in society • Eleanor of Aquitaine • Great political power • Married two kings

  10. Towns grow • After 1000 cities grew due to population and trade
