Analysis 4 • Policies about labeling genetically modified (GM) foods, such as GM papaya, vary from country to country. Brazil, China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia require labeling of all GM foods and products. Japan requires GM labeling for some products but allows voluntary labeling of others. The United States has a voluntary labeling policy. Certain countries will only import foods that are certified 100% GM free. In countries where labeling is mandatory, consumers often will not buy products that are not certified GM-free. What are the trade-offs of labeling genetically modified foods?
