  3. Read the introduction. • Gel electrophoresis is the process through which DNA fragments are separated based on their weight.

  4. Challenge • Which samples contain genetically modified corn?

  5. Review the entire Procedure before you perform the activity.

  6. Where did the GM corn in the silo come from?

  7. Analysis 2 • Based on your DNA electrophoresis results, prepare a report to the city that hired you to test corn. In the report state your conclusion about which samples have been genetically modified, and explain the evidence that supports your conclusion.

  8. Analysis 4 • Policies about labeling genetically modified (GM) foods, such as GM papaya, vary from country to country. Brazil, China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia require labeling of all GM foods and products. Japan requires GM labeling for some products but allows voluntary labeling of others. The United States has a voluntary labeling policy. Certain countries will only import foods that are certified 100% GM free. In countries where labeling is mandatory, consumers often will not buy products that are not certified GM-free. What are the trade-offs of labeling genetically modified foods? Explain at least two trade-offs.
