The Ashmolean Museum is committed to sustainability through its Green IT Strategy. It includes monitoring energy consumption across all technology and infrastructure to establish effective policies that reduce our carbon footprint. With 169 full-time and 86 part-time staff, the strategy emphasizes energy management not just for IT equipment but across all operational areas, including workstations and server management. Future goals focus on increasing server virtualization, promoting remote working, and enhancing user education to achieve significant reductions in energy costs while fostering a sustainable environment.

The Strategy: 2 - Identify Communicate Monitor Establish Policies Identify Manage
Identify … “but it’s not just IT stuff” IT Equipment Servers Workstations Non IT Equipment Others It should be remembered that energy is consumed by many pieces of equipment, not just IT stuff!
No. of “active” Workstations: 150 No. of Servers: 26 No. of Switches: 31 No, of UPS: 50 No. of Printers: >60 (perhaps about 40 are attached to the network) “Yet More Background: ICT Infrastructure”
The Strategy: 3 - Manage Communicate Monitor Establish Policies Identify Manage
Manage: Workstations – FiDo OUCS, OeRC, OUCE & OUED Power management monitoring (PMM) and Wake on LAN (WOL) • User driven wake up on demand • Group Wake up • Easy Administration • Client less • Excellent Support http://www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/greenit/wol.xml
Manage: Workstations – PC Power Down PC Powerdown Powerdown Clients Powerdown Server and Monitor • Modular plugin Application • Client – Server based deployment • Group Shutdown management Policies set on server Powerdown Server
Manage: Workstations – Powerman Datasynergy Systems Powerman 5 Power Manager • Activity Based Monitoring • Easy Group Policy based configuration • Client – Server application Active Directory Powerman Management Server Policies Manage Reports AD Container
The Strategy: 4 – Establish Policies Communicate Monitor Identify Establish Policies Manage
Establish Policies & Guidelines Infrastructure services • Citrix based server virtualisation • Storage virtualisation and consolidation Desktop policies • Hibernate when inactive • Promote remote working • Tie in remote working with OUCS WOL • Virtual desktop delivery • Reuse low spec computers • Printer consolidation and management
The Future • User education • Shared knowledge and initiative • Increase and consolidate server virtualisation • Aim for the best of all worlds • Reduce our Monthly Energy Bill (£15,000) Open Source Commercial In house
Two Warnings • Manage Expectations! • Reduce our Energy Bill (£15,000pm) • ICT contribution: <<10% probably <£800pm • Potential “Saving”: “only” £200pm (<2%) • Beware of “Responsibility Creep” • What is consuming the power? • Just because it is “controlled” by computer software does not necessarily mean it’s an IT Problem!
