Initial Safety Campaign • On October 6, 2011, Dr. Smith sent out a connect-ED message to all parents. • On October 7, 2011, a press conference was held at Creekside Middle School with Sheriff Ben Johnson and Mr. Don Mair, parent, highlighting concerns and asking for the community to assist us in keeping our students safe. • A letter was sent to all local police chiefs requesting their departments to join in the safety campaign. • Talking points were developed for SAC/PTA presidents to discuss at their meetings.

  5. Initial Safety Campaign (continued) • Links to safety sites and website articles were published in school newsletters. • Schools made morning announcements on Tips for Walkers, Bikers and Bus Riders. • Our safety message was placed on each school’s marquee. • Bicycle and pedestrian safety is currently being taught at each of our elementary schools.

  6. Current Collaborative Partnerships • Volusia County Community Traffic Safety Committees (East and West)—representatives from local government Public Works Departments and DOT responding to infrastructure concerns • Volusia County Crossing Guard Evaluation Committee—representatives from Volusia County Council, Public Works, Sheriff’s Department, School District, and DOT

Current Collaborative Partnerships (Con’t.) • Volusia County Transportation Planning Organization—representatives from local governments, DOT, County and School District responsible for long-range planning • Their Advisory Committeesinclude Bicycle/ Pedestrian, Citizens’ and Technical Coordinating • Hazardous Walking Committee—representatives from Crossing Guards, County Public Works, DOT, and School District Transportation Services

New Safety Initiatives Based on recent accidents, we are going toreinforce our safety message by initiating the following: • Strongly encourage parents to speak to their child about safety and provide them with information on pedestrian, bicycle, and bus safety. • Involve students from each school to help develop a school-wide safety campaign that may include posters, videos and social media announcements (Facebook & YouTube). • Ask SAC/PTA members to assist with safety initiatives that include supporting our principals in enforcing the parent pick-up and drop-off traffic patterns at our schools.

New Safety Initiatives (continued) • Continue morning announcements at all schools concerning student pedestrian and bicycle safety. • Hold school assemblies to discuss student pedestrian and bicycle safety tips. • Continue to publish safety tips on our district web page and expand to schools. • Schedule assemblies for Orange City schools as follows: --University High School --Orange City Elementary School --River Springs Middle School --DeBary Elementary School --Manatee Cove Elementary School
