  2. Compelling question Why do some tornadoes form over water and don’t turn into hurricanes?

  4. Tornadoes form by… Tornadoes form over land. Due to hot and cold wind spinning around each other, and the drop in air pressure.

  5. Hurricanes form by… Air from surrounded areas with higher air pressure pushes into a low pressure area. Then the new air becomes warm and moist and rises, too. As warm air continues to rise, the surrounding air swirls in to take it’s place.

  6. Hurricanes are low pressure systems that spin counter-clockwise. Hurricanes bring thunder storms along with winds surpassing 155 mph. Tornadoes- wind that travel 65-300 mph. http://www.hurricane-facts.com/

  7. Tornadoes turn at a counter-clockwise direction in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere. When a tornado forms in the southern hemisphere it spins the wrong way and cant form into a hurricane. But in the northern hemisphere a tornado might pick up too much water and becomes too heavy to form a hurricane.

  8. In conclusion… When tornadoes form over water they pick up water and form water spouts (large spinning spirals of water). They do not form into hurricanes!!

  9. To recap… Tornadoes can only have a small chance of turning into hurricanes in the northern hemisphere because they will spin the wrong direction any where else. When tornadoes form over water the pick up water and become to heavy to change form.

  10. Therefore, it is almost IMPOSSIBLE for tornadoes to turn into hurricanes, due to the way it forms.
