Steps to Prewriting • Always read the prompt and know what the key word/words are. • Decide how you are going to address the prompt ( how you are going to present your ideas – time order, how to, layering of details). • Brainstorm to determine your key points. • Develop your opening. • Look at your brainstormed points and make sure they will address your opening. • Arrange your key points.

  4. What is your favorite season? • Think about all 4 seasons and what you like about each one. • Write the season you choose on the top of your paper. • Say to your self several times “what do I like about_____” • As quickly as you can, write everything that comes to mind.(brainstorming) • Don’t stop to evaluate your ideas, just list them as fast as you can write. • Now, look at your list of ideas – for one paragraph 3 ideas is plenty. • Choose the 3 ideas (supports) from your brainstorming you like best.

  5. Brainstorming • Decide which season? • Fall • Think why fall, why fall? • Write all the things I can think of: • cool weather Sports • Halloween • open windows • Thanksgiving

  6. Detail Sentences – Paragraph Development • Take your brainstorming ideas and decide which you are going to use. ( Cool weather, sports, holidays) • Broaden or narrow ideas as necessary to build/ layer paragraph development. • Decide the order of your details ( brainstorming list) and how you are going to develop paragraph ( how to, sequential order, description) [details can tell why, when, where, how, who, because, reasons] • Decide what you are going to say about each detail – write it beside the detail on your planning sheet. (remember to use sequence words: next, also, in addition to, first, another, etc.)

  7. Detail Planning • Cooler weather – makes me feel good • refreshed, invigorated • Sports – football on Sunday • Holidays - Halloween • Thanksgiving

  8. Topic sentence • Must address the prompt – include key words / words • Must be broad enough to allow room for the development of ideas. • Must have some “buffering, personalization, etc.”. • Can be one or the first two sentences of the paragraph. • Summer vacations, spring’s rebirth of life, sitting around the warm fireplaces of winter, and the cool, crispness of fall ,all the seasons have their pluses; but for me, it’s all about fall.

  9. Closing Statement • Your closing statement must follow the development of your topic. • Depending on the type of paragraph/ essay, the closing can be humorous, a question or a statement that rephrases your opening. • Always look at your opening statement on your planning sheet and then look over your details. • Your closing should tie up all the information in your paper. • Regardless of the reason, fall is my favorite season of the year.

  10. “Must Haves” for this essay • Topic sentence • Paragraph unity ( consisting of at least 10 sentences) • Closing statement • At least: 4 prepositional phrases 3 compound sentence 3 complex sentences 10 adjectives All sentences must be complete according to the definition given.

  11. Summer vacations, spring’s rebirth of life, sitting around the warm fireplace of winter, and the cool crispness of fall, all the season have their pluses; but for me, it’s all about fall! After the extremely hot Texas summer, the coolness of fall is a welcome treat. I love to breathe in the crisp morning air, open the windows and sleep surrounded by that same cool, crispness. The clear, star studded nights seem to be brighter in the fall. The chill I feel on that first fall morning, and the pleasure I get from curing up with a blanket on the couch to watch Sunday football only add to the reasons I choose fall as my favorite season. I seem to get a feeling of being refreshed, invigorated and reenergized by both the cooler temperatures and the shortening of the days. How can I describe my feelings about fall without including the holiday season! Little children, dressing like their heroes, ringing doorbells and yelling “trick or treat” reminds me of all those Halloweens I ran through the neighborhood with my own sack collecting goodies. The aroma of baked goods, turkey and dressing is something I start looking forward to the first day I feel the chill in the air. Maybe it’s the actual pleasure I get from the cool weather, the holidays and football season; or maybe it’s the warm, comforting memories from my childhood evoked as fall approaches. Regardless of the reason, fall is my favorite season of the year.
