Becoming Pope • He was canon of St. Peter's • He was made subdeacon of the Roman Church by Pope Gregory VIII • In 1190 his uncle, Pope Clement III, created him cardinal-deacon of Santi Sergio e Baccho. •  On the 8th of January 1198 Celestine III died and on the same day Lotario was unanimously elected pope by the assembled cardinals.  • He was 37 years old.

  4. Popely Actions • Innocent proclaimed the same indulgences for a crusade to Livonia as the Holy Land. The result was the "conversion" of the Livonians and the Letts by the crusaders headed by the knights of the Teutonic Order. • Another crusade was proclaimed by Innocent in 1207 against the Albigenses.
