  4. 1. Managing GDI Objects □ GDI (Graphics Device Interface) Object - What is GDI ? : Microsoft Windows application programming interface and core operating system component responsible for representing graphical objects and transmitting them to devices such as monitors. GDI has GDI handles ( brushes, pens, bitmap..) and there is a theoretical limit of 65,536 GDI handles per session. However, the maximum number of GDI handles that can be opened per session is usually lower, since it is affected by available memory. Generally, when user run many screens in one Explorer that use GDI object (For example ALPS), user might encounter problem of frozen or unresponsive operation due to the lack ofWindows GDI capacity. (Windows Default GDI capacity is 10,000) □ Potential Problem with Frozen and Unresponsive Program - Solution - Potential Problem : Currently in case ALPS user run many ALPS screens, GDI capacity can affect Windows itself and Windows might be unable to draw any more GDI objects, leading to potential ALPSapplication misbehaving, frozen and unresponsive program operation with error message. - Solution & Managing GDI : GDI is responsible for tasks such as drawing lines and curves, rendering fonts and palettes. The total available GDI objects varies from one version of Windows to another. Window XP and Windows 7 have a configurable limit ( via the registry) that defaults to 10,000 objects. By increasing GDI capacity available from 10,000 to 20,000, we can prevent Frozen andUnresponsive Program. - How to Increase GDI Objects : If ALPS user encounter frozen/unresponsive program, Please increase GDIcapacity value in your PC using GDI.exe file provided .
