Physical Map • Map that shows how the land looks • Mtns. Rivers, Plains, Lakes, etc.
Political Map • Map that shows how humans have divided the surface of the earth • Identify countries, cities, borders and regions
Relief Map • A physical map that shows the height of the land above sea level
Special Purpose Map • Maps for rainfall, population density, product maps, etc. • They have a specific purpose • Look at the title to tell purpose

Map Scale • A way to find the distances on a map by using inches & centimeters for miles and kilometers • Allows you to find actual distances
Map Legend/Key • Tells you what the symbols on a map stand for • Normally in bottom corner
Cardinal Directions • North, South, East & West
Intermediate Directions • Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, Southeast
Compass Rose • Shows direction on a map • Draw a Compass Rose in your notes
