  1. Cooperative Learning & Problem Solving “How do we work in a group?” AVID 1 – February 7

  2. When we have a stake in each other’s success, we have a strong motivation to cooperate!

  3. Cooperative Learning • Students work as a team, each contributing something towards a group goal. • Helps us learn the skills we need to cooperate in an increasingly interdependent society. • Helps us overcome the fear of asking for or offering help. • Helps us overcome misunderstandings we have based on stereotypes.

  4. We all think of ourselves as individuals, but in fact, we gain much of our identity through group participation!

  5. What groups do you belong to? • Think of the “groups” you belong to: your family, a church, this school, a sports team, your friends, etc. • How do these groups “shape” who YOU are? • Each time we join a new group, those people change our behavior, personality, and in essence, our “identity”!

  6. The Ideal Group Member is… • Open-minded • Cooperative rather than competitive • Patient • Dynamic

  7. A Discussion is: • A cooperative exchange of information, opinions, and ideas. • Group members helping to bring all sides of a problem to the surface for consideration. • Purposeful talk by people committed to working together.

  8. Cohesion: • Is imperative in discussion. • Happens when members of a group share values, have respect for each other, and look to each other for support. • Exists when all members of the group are pulling the same way.

  9. Problem-Solving Steps: • Define the problem. • Establish criteria for a workable solution. • Analyze the problem. • Brainstorm solutions. • Evaluate the possible solutions to determine the best one. • Suggest ways to carry out this solution.

  10. Conflict • Constructive Conflict: develops when members use their differences to discover the best ideas and not to “score points” against each other • Disruptive Conflict: divides members into competing sides that refuse to listen or compromise. Personal victory becomes more important than the success of the group.

  11. This is the end of the PowerPoint. Please continue on to the next slide for further instructions.

  12. Now… • Take a few minutes to go back and mark the important information in your notes. • Write main ideas/questions in the left margin based on those important ideas. • Create a three-sentence summary which includes the main points of today’s PowerPoint.
