  2. OBJECTIVES • To establish working partnerships with the Leaders • Share information on the mandate & functions of the Commission • To discuss the concept of Men's Seminar & issues facing Widowhood • Establishing forums that deal with Gender issues

  3. Vision • What does CGE advocate? • A society free from gender discrimination and all forms of oppression.

  4. Mission • Promotion, protection, monitoring and Evaluation of gender equality in South Africa.

  5. CGE • The Commission on Gender Equality was created in terms of Section 187 of South Africa. The CGE is governed by the Commission on Gender Equality Act 39 of 1996, this Act set out powers and functions. The main powers and functions of CGE are:

  6. Powers and Functions • Promote respect for and the protection, development of gender equality. • Investigate gender related complaints. • Make recommendations to Gov to promote gender equality.

  7. cont • Monitor & evaluate policies of state organs, public bodies & private sector • Develop, conduct & manage education & information • Evaluate any Act of Parliament, family Law, customary practice, systems or any other Law

Programmes • Public Education and Information: • Develops, manages and conducts information and education programmes, including workshops and campaigns, for the promotion and attainment of gender equality • Policy and Research: • Undertakes research in rural and urban settings in all provinces through the Provincial Offices of the CGE

Programmes (cont.) • Legal Services: • Investigates gender-related issues on its own accord or upon receipt of a complaint, • Evaluates and monitors any Act of Parliament or any other law or treaty affecting or likely to affect gender equality or the status of women and • Makes Submissions to Parliament with regards thereto.

  10. CGE • The CGE is backed by criminal sanction and failure to cooperate with an investigation may constitute a criminal offence & liability on conviction to a fine or 6 months imprisonment. • Required to report annually to the President on activities undertaken and achievements
