  2. PRE-REQUISITE SKILL • DIVIDE AND ROUND TO THE NEAREST TENTH • 8 ÷ 3 = 2.7 • 19 ÷ 6 = 3.2 • 52 ÷ 8 = 6.5 • 67 ÷ 9 = 7.4 CONFIDENTIAL

  3. MIXED NUMBERS • A Mixed Number indicates the sum of a whole number and a fraction. A number like 11/3 is an example of a mixed number. • 1 1/3 = 1 + 1/3 CONFIDENTIAL

  4. Improper Fraction • If the numerator is greater than the denominator, then the fractions ae called improper fractions. • Mixed Numbers can written as improper fraction. CONFIDENTIAL

  5. The number below shows the number line show 2 groups of fractions. 0 1234 56 78 910 1112 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 The numerators are less than the denominators The numerators are greater than the denominators CONFIDENTIAL

  6. MIXED NUMBERS AS IMPROPER FRACTIONS • Draw a model for 4 1/6, then write 4 1 as 6 Improper fractions. Since the mixed number is greater than 4, draw 5 models that are divided into 6 equal sections to show sixths. Then shade four wholes and one sixth. CONFIDENTIAL

  7. Write 4 1 as an improper fraction 6 • There are twenty-five 1/6 s. So, 4 1/6 can be written as 25 6 CONFIDENTIAL

  8. Now your turn! • Draw a model for 3 3/8. Then write 3 3/8 as an improper fraction. 3 3/8 = 27/8 CONFIDENTIAL

  9. Mixed Numbers as Improper Fractions • Multiply the whole number and the denominator. Then add the numerator • 6 ½ = (6 x 2) + 1 = 13 2 2 CONFIDENTIAL

  10. Example – 2 • Write 3 ¼ as improper fractions. • i.e 3 ¼ = (3 x 4) + 1 = 13 4 4 CONFIDENTIAL

  11. Your Turn!!! • Write each mixed number as an improper fraction. • 4 3/8 = ( 4 x 8) + 3 = 35 8 8 4 ¾ = (4 x 4) + 3 = 19 4 4 CONFIDENTIAL

  12. Improper Fractions as Mixed Fractions 4 4 2 4 • Improper fractions can also be written as mixed numbers. Divide the numerator by the denominator. • Example: 18 4 Use the remainder as the numerator of the fraction 4 18 16 2 CONFIDENTIAL

  13. EXAMPLE – 2 2 17 16 1 8 • Write 17 into mixed fractions 8 Divide 17/8 17 = 2 1 8 8 CONFIDENTIAL

  14. Now your turn • Write each improper fraction as a mixed fraction. • 19 = 34 5 7 . 28 = 111 17 17 CONFIDENTIAL

  23. Do this problems • City W is 45/4 meters long. Write the distance as mixed numbers. • 45/4 = 11 ¼ • Mr. Stephen said to Miss Mary that he wants 3 ¾ spoons of sugar for a tea. Represent 3 ¾ as improper fractions • 3 ¾ = 15/4 CONFIDENTIAL

  24. Review • A mixed number indicates the sum of a whole number and a fraction • If the numerator is greater than the denominator, then the fraction is called improper fraction. • To convert a mixed number into improper fraction, multiply the whole number and denominator and to the product add the numerator. • To convert an improper fraction into a mixed fraction, divide the numerator by the denominator and use the remainder as the numerator of the fraction. CONFIDENTIAL
