  9. “The academic intensity of the student’s high school curriculum still counts more than anything else in pre-collegiate history in providing momentum toward completing a bachelor’s degree.” And while taking more mathematics in high school is critical “It is not merely getting beyond Algebra2 in high school any more.”

  10. PREREQUISITES In order to enroll in any course, a student must meet the requirements (prerequisites) for admission to that course. These are included in the description for the course.

  11. GUIDEPOSTS TOWARD GRADUATION EACH STUDENT IN THE CLASS OF 2015 WILL NEED A MINIMUM OF 21 TOTAL CREDITS FOR GRADUATION. GRADE PLACEMENT Students will be classified by grades according to the number of credits they have accumulated. The minimum credits for grade classification will be as follows: GRADE CLASSIFICATION 10th grade 5 credits 11th grade 10 credits 12th grade 15 credits COURSE LOAD REQUIREMENTS A student should be aware of his/her personal progress each year, so graduation can be attained. In order to make satisfactory progress toward receiving a diploma each student must be enrolled in a minimum of 5.50 credits per year.

  12. REQUIRED SUBJECTS • Required subjects must be taken during the school year at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School. Students who fail a required course during the school year should arrange to repeat the course in summer school or night school. • Minimum Requirements • English 1, 2, 3, 4 4 credits • Social Studies 3 credits • 1 credit of American History • 1 credit of World History • .50 credit of Am. Government • .50 credit of Economics • Science 3 credits • Mathematics 4 credits • Health .50 credit • *Physical Education 1 .25 credit • *2nd PE course .25 credit • Electives: 1 total credit 6 credits • in Bus./Tech, Fine • Arts and/or World Language • Total 21 credits • *in lieu of PE credits, students may: 1) qualify to waive the requirement by 2 seasons of participation in band or 2 seasons of interscholastic sports and add other .5 elective credit; or, 2) receive PE credit by completing PE through credit flexibility

  13. PLANNING YOUR SCHEDULE • Planning your schedule for high school requires yearly self-appraisal. You must examine your interests and goals. Study the various curricular offerings and the prerequisites needed to undertake the next desired step in the educational process. Our curriculum is flexible in that a student may elect subjects from various departments. There should be a basic plan of related subjects that will provide a foundation for your projected post-high school goals. • Read the enclosed material carefully and thoughtfully. Your counselor, teachers, and parents will aid you in any way possible. To prepare for admission to any one of Ohio's public or private four-year colleges or universities, it is recommended that students meet the following minimum College Preparatory program: • English 4 credits • Mathematics 4 credits • Social Studies 3 credits • Science 3 credits (2 Lab Sciences) • World Language 2 credits* • The Arts 1 credit** • *Various colleges recommend additional world language preparation. Check with your guidance counselor and colleges/universities of your choice for additional information.

  14. Lunch Groupings If you are participating in Concert Band and select 7510M you will already have your lunch grouped with the course and WILL NOT need to select lunch separately!

  15. COURSE CHANGES • Planning a schedule for the next school year is a difficult task and situations may occur requiring a change in that schedule. These schedule changes, however, have a serious effect on class size, teacher assignments, and the overall master-schedule, and therefore, must be made sparingly. The student and parent are urged not to plan a program with the idea that it can be changed. Once a student selects his/her courses (verified by parents) the Guidance Department will not initiate a schedule change unless a compelling educational reason exists. • After the close of the school year no changes will occur unless: • there is a technical error in the scheduling process • it is clear that the student is academically misplaced • there is a scheduling conflict

Credit Flexibility • Credit Flexibility-Proposal is to reflect Senate Bill 311 • Goals of the policy are to broaden the scope of curricular options • Increase depth of study • Tailor the learning time or conditions needed to complete high school diploma • This can be done in several ways, including educational travel, independent study, internship, community service, test-out, distance learning or after school programs

  17. AP Courses & Requirements • Students enrolling in AP courses should expect to develop analytical reasoning skills and study the subject matter in great depth. Approval for enrolling will be based on student ability, past performance, counselor and/or teacher recommendation, and prerequisite courses. • ALL STUDENTS TAKING AP COURSES WILL BE REQUIRED TO TAKE THE AP EXAM IN MAY!

  18. Career Technical Honors Diploma • Students need to fulfill all but one criterion for the following Career-TechnicalDiploma with Honors. • Earn four units of English • Earn four units of mathematics which will include Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry or equivalent and another higher level course • Earn four units of science, including physics and chemistry • Earn four units of Social Studies; • Earn four units in the student’s vocational or technical education curriculum; • 3.5 on a four-point scale • Obtain a composite score of 27 on the ACT; or an overall score on the SAT of 1210.

  19. INTERACTIVE DISTANCE LEARNING • There will be course opportunities offered through the interactive distance learning system. Students interested in this program should contact their counselors for additional information and scheduled courses. Tentative offerings are: • ACT Test Preparation • SAT Test Preparation • All “online” course inquiries and sign-ups are handled through the guidance department.

  23. Transcripts **High school course work completed at the middle school will be displayed on the high school transcript but NOT calculated into the GPA. **High school course work completed at the high school will be on the transcript and calculated in the GPA.
