2. The life of Sir Peter Blake Born in 1948, Sir Peter Blake grew up in a small wooden house in Bayswater on the northern flanks of Auckland’s WaitemataHarbour. His father, Brian, had been a gunboat captain in the Royal Navy during WWII. Born in 1948, Blake grew up in a wooden bungalow in Bayswater on the northern flanks of Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour. Sir Peter Blake is the only sailor to have taken part in the first five Whitbread Round the World races - now known as the Volvo Ocean Race. Held every four years, the race follows a general route from Europe, south through the Atlantic Ocean, around the tip of Africa, and then across the southern ocean. The following year (1991), he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth. Blake went on to lead Team New Zealand to two successive America’s Cup victories.

About Sir Peter Blake • He was born on the 1st of October 1948 • In 1997, Blake became the skipper of the Antarctic Explorer, which he later purchased from the Society and renamed it to the Seamaster • He won the 1989–1990 Whitbread Round the World Race by setting the fastest time around the world as co-skipper of ENZA New Zealand • In the 2000 America's Cup, Team New Zealand, still led by Blake, became the first non-American team to successfully defend the Americas Cup, beating Prada 5-0 • During 2001 he led expeditions to Antarctica and the Amazon aboard the seamaster • Blake was murdered by pirates while monitoring environment change on the Amazon River on 5th December 2001 at the age of 53
