  2. The Government announced plans to overhaul the National Curriculum in 2013.

  3. The main aim was to raise standards, particularly as the UK was slipping down international student assessment league tables.

  4. Inspired by what is taught in the world’s most successful school systems, as well as in the best UK schools, the new curriculum was designed to produce productive, creative and well educated students.

  5. Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Education at the time, said the new curriculum would be more demanding.

  6. David Cameron described it as “rigorous, engaging and tough.”

  7. Although the new curriculum is intended to be more challenging, the content is actually slimmer than the previous curriculum, focusing on essential core subject knowledge.

  8. According to the Government the new curriculum does not tell teachers “how to teach”, but gives them the freedom to shape the curriculum to their pupils’ needs.

  9. The National Curriculum provides an outline of core knowledge around which teachers can develop exciting and stimulating lessons to promote the development of pupils’ knowledge, understanding and skills as part of the wider school curriculum.
