  2. Simulations • Use is becoming recognized as an important tool in schools. • Simulating reality is useful. • Students experience reality in an educational setting.

  3. Characteristics • “Real" or virtually real. • Simulate some activity so well that real learning takes place. • Motivates students to learn. • Hands-on • Age appropriate • Empowering – student controls learning

  4. Successful Simulations • Clear objectives • Know what you want students to experience • Explain purpose, task, and expectations • Promote detail and accuracy • Simulations should be fun • Provide follow-up activities

  5. Resources • Physics • HPE • Math • Science

  6. Objectives: • Identify 5 A Day • Calculate a serving size • Set and Achieve 5 A Day Goal • Practice reading and decision making skills

  7. Activity • Guided practice: Complete a simulation with the Dole 5 A Day Adventure Story. Build a story by making decisions. Read the story to the class. • Independent practice: Create and print your own story.

  8. Follow-up • Require students to do one or both of the following assignments: A. Print story and read to family members B. Complete 5 This Week chart

  9. Assignment • Objective: Participate in a simulation. Discuss what you learn in tappedin. • Go to: Explore Learning • You will watch two movies: 1. What educators are saying about us 2. One of the explorelearning demo movies • Open a trial account. Select a simulation and complete the simulation.

  10. TappedIn Discussion Provide answers to the following questions: • What is a simulation? • What simulation did you complete? Give a brief description. • What objectives were addressed? • How would it be beneficial to student learning? • How can simulations support you as a teacher? • Was the simulation interesting? Would it be fun for students?
