  1. HTAP2 2012-2016 WORKPLAN Themes of Cooperative Activities Under TF HTAP 35 Work Packages identified, each with a volunteer leader

  2. HTAP2 status • Anthropogenic emissions: Mandatory • HTAP_v2.2 Global Emissions Mosaics compiled from EDGAR4.3 and regional inventories used for U.S., Europe (consistent with AQMEII) and Asia (consistent with MICS-Asia). • Source Categories: power, industry, transport, buildings, agriculture, ships, aviation • 0.1º x 0.1º spatial resolution (some data at 0.25º); • 2008 and 2010 annual (and monthly) files per sector • CO, NMVOC, NOX, NH3, SO2, PM10, PM2.5, OC , BC • Individual VOC emissions : Speciation guidance • Global emissions files calculated/adapted from RETRO ratios (TNO) and HTAP_v2.2 • Required to calculate HTAP NMVOC emission for industrial sub-sectors - 0.1º x 0.1º spatial resolution • 23 VOCs species • Other emissions : Recommended • Volcano emissions • Biomass burning : GFEDv3 daily • Dust and sea salt : model calculated; DMS emissions : Lana et al. 2011 H02 Wekly seminar, JRC, 23 October 2014

  3. HTAP2 status • 2008 & 2010 Global Emissions Mosaics (HTAP_v2.2) HTAPv2 2010 NOx emissions from the transport sector (without aviation and ships)

  4. HTAP2 status • 2.1 Source – Reception regions Tier 1 = 17 regions Global, Oceans, 13 land mass regions, Artic, Antarctic Tier 2 = 60 sub-regions Region mask available at: http://iek8wikis.iek.fz-juelich.de/HTAPWiki/WP2.1

  5. 2.5 Boundary Conditions for the regional simulations • Objective • Ensure consistent regional versus global simulations in order to examine the effects of • the finer spatial and temporal resolution of regional models • the different process represented in global and regional models. • Regions • AQMEII: North America and Europe • MICS Asia: Asia • Provided BC datasets • 4 Modelling Groups: NOAA/GFDL, ECMWF, SNU (Korea), NIES (Japan) • 6 Perturbation scenarios: • BASE, CH4INC, GLOALL, NAMALL, EURALL, EASALL, SASALL • 3 years: 2008-2010 • JRC : BC definition, harmonisation, quality control and documentation.

  6. 2.6 Global Model simulations Global Base and Perturbation simulations (AeroCom & other global modellers) • AeroCom • Intends to evaluate global aerosol models, fair and transparent • AeroCom server (MetNo) wellcome all HTAP2 global outputs • Will perform additional AeroCom-HTAP2 specific experiments • First priority global simulations • BASE: base simulation (non perturbed) • CH4INC: global methane increase • NAMALL, EURALL,EASALL, SASALL, RBUALL, MDEALL, GLOALL • 20% decrease of all anthro. emissions for each of the 7 regions and globally • Status • - About 20 participants • 5 models delivered outputs : with link to aerocom catalogue

  7. 2.6 Regional Model simulations • North America and Europe (AQMEII) • AQMEII: Air Quality Model Evaluation International Initiative • Intends to evaluate results of regional scale models applied over N. America and the EU. • AQMEII-HTAP modelling exercises focus on the following questions: • How well do regional and global models simulate air quality at various space and time scales over North America and Europe? • How sensitive are estimated source/receptor relationships to grid resolution? • Status • NA & EU regional scale model exercise based on HTAP global set up • 19 modelling groups from NA and EU participating • Boundary conditions for base case (2008 and 2010) provided by ECMWF • Complementary emission data (biogenics, forest fires) • Base case simulation (2010) started August/Sept 2014; • Model outputs expected 31 JAN 2015

  8. 2.6 Regional Model simulations • Asia (MICS-Asia) • MICS-Asia : Model Intercomparison Study for Asia • MICS-Asia - HTAP2 collaboration • Exchange of intercomparison technologies (e.g. ENSEMBLE/AEROCOM) and interoperability. • Lesson’s learned from North American/European model experiments. • Shared emissions database between HTAP and MICS • A limited number of shared experiments between global and regional models • Strengthening scientific collaboration • Model evaluation with ‘in-house’ Asian data.

  9. HTAP Station lists 2 lists of 3 types of monitoring stations: “Surface Gas (G), “Surface Aerosol” (A) , “Profile” (P) • Complete list It has been compiled from the collection, merging, updating and correction of various datasets: AQMEII**, AeroCom, CALNEX*, GAW, EMEP, EANET, ABC, JMA, IAGOS, SHADOZ, IAGOS, …… • Short list and maps of HTAP2 stations • = where hourly global model outputs are requested It has been compiled from the HTAP2 complete list, by reducing the coverage density (mainly over USA and EU) of the “Surface Gas” and the “Surface Aerosol” monitoring networks. • *Update of “AIRS” (EPA AQ) locations in AQMEII stations list (provided by Robert Vet) • *Correction of some EPA AQ elevations (provided by Owen Cooper)

  10. Surface aerosol (1047 stations) HTAP2 Stations = where hourly global model outputs are requested Surface gaz (2040 stations) « Profile » (240 stations) Completed on 19/12/2013

  11. Data Network and Analysis tools (MetNo, Oslo) • Data Sharing Infrastructure : • Efficiency of Joint Data Analysis • TB mining, tool sharing, joint papers • Cooperation with complementary scientific experts (aerosol, chemistry, observations, meteorology, emissions, impacts on health and ecosystem, IT) • Feedback to national model development efforts • Mutual Trust in results and findings • Underpinning of international policy framework discussion

  12. Data Network and Analysis tools AeroCom analysis tool • AeroCom tool • (aerocom.net.metno) • currently being adapted to HTAP2

  13. Use of the ENSEMBLE system for AQMEII Receptor data Ground-based soundings Airborne measurements Airborne measurements Satellite imagery And data (Galmarini et al. 2001, JER, 2004 JEM&S, 2004 AE, 2008 AE, 2012 AE)

  14. Data Network and Analysis tools • (http://ensemble2.jrc.ec.europa.eu/public/) • (Preliminary work on HTAP 1 : • NetCDF> ENSEMBLE format) • Currently being adapted to HTAP2 • e.g, for • WCS, WFS, services for remote access to Ensemble and use of the NetCDF files for offline analysis Example of how to access remotely Ensemble for displaying data within the sample file, with NASA's Panoply.

  15. HTAP Phase 2 What is next? Target dates and upcoming (tentative) meetings • 31 December     Target for submitting all simulation results • 31 January Aqmeii regionals scale simulations 2010 • 30 April Aqmeii simulation 20% Nox emission reduction • Start of the analysis
