(A) Quadro di Risonanza Magnetica Nucleare di un paziente affetto da MCJ. Le zone di corteccia cerebrale a maggiore lucentezza (frecce bianche) mostrano le sedi delle lesioni cerebrali. Queste ultime sono caratterizzate da una perdita di sostanza cerebrale che assume l’ aspetto di una spugna da cui «spongiosi» (figura B, frecce nere) e da depositi granulari di prione (punteggiature marroni figura C, frecce nere). Per dare un’ idea del danno cerebrale provocato dai prioni , nella figura D è rappresentato la corteccia cerebrale di un soggetto normale.
