  1. Evaluation Questions and guidance

  2. Important! • The coursework is marked out of 100. There are three categories for your overall coursework grade: • Research and Planning – 20 marks • Construction – 60 marks • Evaluation – 20 marks

  3. Important! • Even though the research & planning and the evaluation are worth less than the construction, they are still worth enough marks to make a difference to your grade. • Don’t make the mistake of rushing through your planning and evaluation, because an A grade magazine will only stay at an A if the other elements are judged to be just as good

  4. 1 • How does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

  5. 1 • This is your opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of the key conventions of magazine design. • You will need to give examples of how your magazine has used, challenged and developed a convention and justify your reasons.

  6. 2 • How does your media product represent particular social groups?

  7. 2 • Representation is a key area for AS Media • You will need to apply some of the theory that you have covered in TV Drama lessons to your own publication. Think about what your images are saying to your audience and deconstruct your images through some strong analysis

  8. 3 • What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

  9. 3 • Even though you need to select the most appropriate institution for publishing your magazine, part of this selection would be to discuss why other institutions would not be appropriate. • You will need to discuss the background of the institution and also discuss their key titles with circulation figures (use the handout we went through in class). • Ideally, we’re looking for a write up on three separate institutions

  10. 4 • Who would be the audience for your media product?

  11. 4 • Start off this section with some images of a typical reader • Remember the mantra age, gender, ethnicity, class, disability and sexuality

  12. 5 • How did you address / attract your audience?

  13. 5 • This is where you need to discuss the technical elements, noting what would appeal to your audience and why • E.g. Why is it that rock/indie magazines use blacks and reds?

  14. 6 • What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

  15. 6 • For this question you will be filmed discussing some of the tools that you have used in InDesign and Photoshop to create your magazine. • This will then need to be posted on to your blog in response to this question.

  16. 7 • Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

  17. 7 • reflect on what you have learnt from the construction of your college magazine to the construction of your music magazine. • compare your two front covers - you should now be in a position to criticiseyour college mag and note what was wrong with it and how you would improve it.
