  1. Ku Klux Klan

  2. Ku Klux Klan Ku Klux Klan an extremist secret society in the US. The Ku Klux Klan was originally founded in the southern states after the Civil War to oppose social change and black emancipation by violence and terrorism. It is best known for advocating white supremacy and acting as terrorists while hidden behind conical hats, masks and white robes.

  3. Description The Name The Symbol History Public opinion

  4. The name The name "Ku Klux Klan" comes from the Greek word "kuklos" which means wheel, circle, or band and the Irish word "clan", which means family.

  5. The symbol According to the Klan, the blood droprepresents the blood shed by Jesus Christ as a sacrifice for the White Aryan Race.

  6. History • First Klan, 1865–1874 • Second Klan, 1915–1944 • Third Klan, since 1946

  7. First Klan • Birth of the Klan • Activities

  8. Birth of the Klan • December 1865Foundation of the clan • April 1867First meeting, leader of the clan was elected • By late 1867The movement had spread throughout the small towns of the South • 1869 Beginning of disbandment

  9. Leader of the first clan Nathan Bedford Forrest

  10. Activities Klan members staged silent marches and threatening midnight horseback rides, leading former slaves to believe that the ghosts of dead had risen to reclaim their land. In many areas threats gave way to beatings, whippings, mutilations and lynchings. Black voters, scalawags and carpetbaggers were all targets of this violence. Such actions were defended by some Klansmen as a means of protecting white womanhood.

  11. Scalawags — a term applied to native white Southerners who supported the federal reconstruction plan and cooperated with the blacks • Carpetbaggers—a term applied to Northerners who went South during Reconstruction, motivated by either profit or idealism.

  12. Second Klan The second Klan rose in response tourbanization and industrialization, massive immigration from eastern and southern Europe, the Great Migration of African Americans to the North, and the migration of African Americans and whites from rural areas to Southern cities Activities

  13. Activities Klan groups lynched and murdered Black soldiers returning from World War I. The Klan warned Blacks that they must respect the rights of the white race "in whose country they are permitted to reside".

  14. Third Klan The name "Ku Klux Klan" began to be used by several independent groups. Beginning in the 1950s, individual Klan groups began to resist the Civil Rights Movement by bombing houses in transitional neighborhoods and the houses of activists, as well as by physical violence, intimidation and assassination. In Birmingham, Alabama, during the tenure of Bull Connor, Klan groups were closely allied with the police and operated with impunity. There were so many bombings of homes by Klan groups that the city's nickname was "Bombingham".

  15. Public opinion I'm black and i live in the south so i can tell you the racial tensions are pretty high. the KKK is a group of cowards. I think they are nothing more than a bunch of crossdressing homo's who have nothing more going on in their lives, so instead they get into other people's live and try to "terrorize" them. A very disgusting organization that should have been stamped out shortly after it was formed – during reconstruction. They are stuck in the past and need to look in themselfs because more than 80% of them have a different ethic background other than "white". And they are cowards
