  1. Jacob and Davey Ku Klux Klan

  2. What is the Ku Klux Klan? • Abbreviated KKK • Formerly known as “The Klan” • They are a racial group, focusing on anti-immigration, white supremacy, and white nationalism • They wear white robes and conical hats to hide their identity • They are known for forming terroristic attacks on other races • They named the group after the Greek word kuklos, which means circle. The name means “Circle of Brothers”

  3. When was it Formed? • It was started in 1865, during the “Reconstructive” era of the Civil War. • It’s exact starting point was in Pulaski, Tennessee (Southern State) • KKK was formed by six Confederate Army veterans.

  4. Why Was It Formed? • They wanted to keep “white supremacy”, which is thinking the white race is superior to all other races. This is exactly what the South was doing with slavery. • They opposed the Republican’s reconstructive ideas.

  5. Ku Klux Klan: What did they do? • Tortured former slaves • Yelled racist remarks and hurt people who spoke out against them • They hung many blacks  • Shot at houses and cars that had Blacks in them • Members of the Klan were rarely arrested, because some police agreed with them. Others disagreed, but couldn’t find them. The KKK moved often in fear of getting caught.

  6. Attacks from the Klan • Before the presidential election of 1868, they killed or wounded over 2000 people. St. Landry Parish, the Republican candidate, registered 1071 votes in the spring election. In the fall election, not a single Republican voted because of the attacks. They did the same thing to Ulysses S. Grant for his try at presidency.

  7. How did the Civil War affect the KKK? • It caused the Ku Klux Klan to form. • It led to other racist groups. (White Camellia, Pale Faces, White Brotherhood, etc.) • It affected voting too. The Ku Klux Klan was good at keeping most African-American men away from the polls. • The KKK is still continuing even today.

  8. Other Facts about the Klan • They didn’t just attack blacks. They also attacked Jews, Italians, Catholics, and many other foreigners. • Their ways of burning the cross wasn’t introduced until the Second Clan era. • In under two years, there were 197 murders and over 500 cases of aggravated assault alone in the Carolinas. • There was a “Ku Klux Klan Act” passed during Ulysses S. Grant’s presidency. He sent troops to South Carolina counties and many members of the Klan were arrested and imprisoned. The Three Klans: • First Klan, 1865-1874 • Second Klan, 1915-1944 • Third Klan, 1946-present
