  2. Arthritis • Arthritis is not a single disease – it is a term that covers over 100 medical conditions. • Arthritis is more common among adults aged 65 years or older, people of all ages (including children) can be affected. • Nearly two-thirds of people with arthritis are younger than age 65 years. Arthritis is more common among women (24.3%) than men (18.7%) in every age group, and it affects members of all racial and ethnic groups. • Arthritis is also more common among adults who are obese than among those who are normal weight or underweight.

  3. Osteoarthritis(OA) is the most common form of arthritis and generally affects elderly patients. • Some forms of arthritis can affect people at a very early age. • Who gets arthritis? • The older we get, the more likely we are to have arthritis: • By the age of 80, it affects 57% of women and 40% of men. In the population as a whole, nearly twice as many women as men are affected

  4. Facts About Arthritis • How Common is Arthritis? • Arthritis can affect people of all ages, including children. • The state’s population continues to age, the number of people affected by arthritis is expected to continue to increase. • What are the symptoms? • Pain, • Swelling • Stiffness in joints or the inability to move a joint normally. • For Rheumatoid arthritis • Joints can become red, warm, swollen and painful, and the person may feel “sick all over.” • Other symptoms are unexplained fever, fatigue, weight loss and swollen lymph glands.

  5. What causes arthritis

  6. Types of Arthritis • Osteoarthritis • Rheumatoid arthritis • Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis • Gouty arthritis • Lupus arthritis • Spondyloarthropathies • Infectious Arthritis • Hemorrhagic Arthritis • Psoriatic Arthritis • Pseudogout Arthritis The most common arthritis are

  7. What is osteoarthritis? • Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis in the UK, affecting an estimated 8.5 million people. • Osteoarthritis often develops in people who are over 50 years of age. • It can develop at any age as a result of an injury or another joint-related condition. • In people affected by osteoarthritis, the cartilage (connective tissue) between their bones gradually wastes away, • leading to painful rubbing of bone on bone in the joints. • The most frequently affected joints are • Hands • Spine • Knees • Hips.

  8. What is rheumatoid arthritis? • Rheumatoid arthritis is a more severe, but less common, form of arthritis than osteoarthritis. • It occurs when the body's immune system attacks and destroys the affected joints, causing pain and swelling to occur. • This can lead to a reduction in movement and the breakdown of bone and cartilage. • In the UK, rheumatoid arthritis affects around 400,000 people, and  often starts in people between the ages of 40 and 50 years old. • Women are three times more likely to be affected by the condition than men.

  9. Does cracking knuckles cause arthritis?chronic knuckle cracking does not appear to increase the risk of hand osteoarthritis, but may reduce the strength of your grip.

  10. Does stress affect my arthritis? • You will be better able to manage stress in your life if you: • find ways to change negative thinking • build a support system • learn to relax • Did you know that stress can negatively impact your arthritis? • Stress can increase muscle tension, which can be related to increased pain among people with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. • In addition to the everyday stress that everyone has, having arthritis may increase your stress at times. • Learning to manage stress can help you feel better mentally and physically as well as reduce your pain.

  11. Arthritis affects computer use • People with arthritis experience more pain and discomfort while using the computer • as compared to the general population of computer users, according to a new study. • Little is known about the magnitude of problems experienced by those with • arthritis during computer use, but a new study explored this question among • people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), osteoarthritis (OA) and fibromyalgia (FM). • Computer use is a risk factor for pain and musculoskeletal disorders in the general population. • Arthritis patients are more at risk because of difficulties performing tasks due to • Pain, • Muscle weakness • Fatigue • Little is known about the magnitude of problems experienced by those with arthritis during computer use.

  12. Rheumatoid Arthritis & Computing • The most common problems • The most common difficulties in using computers occur from restricted mobility in • Hands • Wrists • Elbows • Shoulders • Neck • A typical example is pain and swelling in the wrists caused by long periods of keyboard and mouse use.

  13. Arthritis and Diabetes Related? • Arthritis and diabetes are not directly related, but the diseases often overlap. • In fact, recent reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that more than half (52 percent) of people with diabetes also have arthritis Rheumatoid Arthritis and Type 1 DiabetesType 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease as is rheumatoid arthritis (RA) • Research also shows genetic connections between rheumatoid arthritis and type 1 diabetes. • In recent years, researchers have identified. • It strongly correlates with the incidence of type 1 diabetes as well as rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis and other autoimmune diseases.

  14. Osteoarthritis and Type 2 DiabetesBecause osteoarthritis (OA) and type 2 diabetes are both common conditions, they are likely to occur together by coincidence. But the two share at least two major risk factors: age and weight.  . Age: Osteoarthritis is largely a disease of wear and tear on joints The risk for type 2 diabetes also increases with age, largely because people become less active, gain weight and lose muscle mass as they age Weight: Obesity affects the joints by increasing the stress on them Arthritis does not cause diabetes and diabetes does not cause arthritis. However, diabetes does sometimes have accompanying joint symptoms, and a sedentary lifestyle and obesity

  15. Joint Pain and DiabetesDiabetes causes musculoskeletal changes that lead to symptoms such as • Joint pain • Stiffness • Swelling • Nodules under the skin (particularly in the fingers) • Tight, thickened skin • Trigger finger • Carpal tunnel syndrome • Painful shoulders • Severely affected feet • It's not just a problem for older people. • Arthritis afflicts 62.4% of diabetes patients 65 and older, vs. 56.2% of those without diabetes. • The findings come from nationwide telephone surveys conducted in 2005 and 2007 general population.

  16. How does Obesity and Overweight Causes Arthritis • obesity increases other health problems, it can be a factor when patients are considering joint replacement. • Losing weight is the best way to help your joints. But if your joint pain is so severe that it affects your daily living, then being obese does not prevent you from having a joint replacement operation. • overweight or obese is a direct cause of arthritis, it is generally agreed that excess weight can affect joint health.

  17. Does Family History Affect Arthritis? If your parents or grandparents suffered from arthritis you may be next in line • Although arthritis can strike anyone, and age is the biggest risk factor for the condition. • According to theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention, certain types of arthritis are linked to specific genes

  18. Lifestyle Factors Linked to Arthritis • Screening for smoking, obesity and diabetes may help identify • those at greater risk for rheumatoid arthritis Risk factors for developing arthritis include:1)Diet high in fat and sugar and wheat, and low in fruit and vegetables 2)Diet high in acidifying artificial beverages e.g. cola 3)Sedentary lifestyle and obesity, insufficient sleep 4)Micro nutrient deficiency (i.e. of vitamins and minerals) caused by eating non-organic, processed and refined foods 5)Lack of adequate sunlight or dietary sources of vitamin D 6)High intake or highly starchy carbohydrates such as potatoes and white flour products which promote overgrowth of bad bacteria in the gut 7)Stressful work or home environments promote hormone imbalances and may increase gut permeability leading to pain and inflammation

  19. Diet and bodyweight impact on arthritis How to balance? • Dietary supplements: also known as food supplement to provide nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, fiber, fattyacids which is insufficient in person’s diet. • It is not always easy to get enough of the vitamins and minerals we need to keep our bodies healthy, and sometimes dietary restrictions or preferences can prevent us from getting important nutrients. • Supplements can help meet our nutritional needs, although they should not be used in place of a healthy, varied diet.

  25. Supporting studies • Boswellin® PS • Boswellic acids are reported to be non competitive inibitors of 5 - lipoxygenase enzyme with AKBBA being the most potent inhibitor. Boswellic acids block Human Leukocyte Elastase (HLE) activity. This dual inhibition of HLE and 5 Lipoxygenase enzyme is unique to Boswellic acids. The anti-arthritic potential of Boswelline® PS is also due to its ability to reduce the various inflammatory markers like TNF-, ILI- and Nitricoxide • Boswellia with anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic and analgesic properties has been shown to benefit patients with osteoarthritis rheumatoid arthritis, tendonitis . • Boswellia acids have been known to reduce joint swelling, maintain mobility and reduce stiffness in the joint. • Glucosamine HCL • Majority of studies agreeing glucosamine is necessary for the building and repair of cartilage. • Benefits include reducing pain and improving mobility for sufferers of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis • Beneficial for healing muscle and tendon injuries and glaucoma.
