  5. American Colonization Society Attempted to free slaves gradually by buying them. Wanted to send freed slaves back to Africa. Started Liberia.

  6. William Lloyd Garrison

  7. William Lloyd Garrison Founded the anti-slavery newspaper, "The Liberator." Started the American Antislavery Society.

  8. Sarah and Angelina Grimke

  9. Sarah & Angelina Grimke Freed their own slaves. Lectured and wrote against slavery.

  10. Frederick Douglass

  11. Frederick Douglass Escaped from slavery. Gave speeches about slavery. Published antislavery newspaper, "The North Star."

  15. Sojourner Truth Gained freedom when New York banned slavery. Preached against slavery in the streets

  16. Harriet Tubman

  17. Harriet Tubman Born a slave in Maryland. Escaped to the north. Most famous conductor on the Underground Railroad. Made 19 trips south, led over 300 people to freedom. Nicknamed "Moses." $40,000 reward for her.

  19. Harriet Beecher Stowe Wrote "Uncle Tom's Cabin" to show northerners the cruelty of slavery.

  20. Nat Turner

  21. Nat Turner Was a slave minister. Led the most violent slave revolt. Killed over 55 whites. He and his followers were hanged.

  22. John Brown

  23. John Brown He and his sons killed 5 pro-slavery men in Kansas.

  24. John Brown He and his sons killed 5 pro-slavery men in Kansas. He wanted to arm slaves, move south and free slaves as they went. He attacked a federal arsenal, was captured and hanged.
