2. Abolition? What is abolition? And who were people who practiced this? Abolition is complete end of slavery in the United States, and people who believed this were abolitionists. There were many abolitionists, but most lived in the North. Most Southerners wanted slavery.

3. Famous Abolitionists John Brown, Frederick Douglass, Quakers, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Harriet Tubman, Willliam Lloyd Garrison, and Sojourner Truth

4. John Brown John Brown was one of the more violent abolitionists. He led the Pottawatomie Massacre, during which five men were killed, in 1856 in Bleeding Kansas, and made his name known in the failed raid at Harpers Ferry in 1859 when he tried and failed to persuade the slaves to fight. He was executed one year later.

5. William Lloyd Garrison William Lloyd Garrison was an abolitionist(duh!) and was editor of the newspaper The Liberator. He was also a founder of the Anti-Slavery Society. Unlike mister execution in the last slide, he was nonviolent and was a very persuasive speaker and writer, but he was just as radical(and no not radical as in skateboard language) John Brown.

6. Harriet Tubman Harriet Tubman escaped from abusive owners in 1849 but instead of staying in Philadelphia, she returned to the South to rescue other slaves and bring them up the Underground Railroad. She freed and guided 300 slaves from the South. She died at the old age of 93. She hated being a slave and wanted to end it. She has been called Moses because of her efforts.

7. Harriet Beecher Stowe Harriet Beecher Stowe was an American abolitionist and author. Her novel Uncle Tom‘s Cabin (1852) was a picture of life for African-Americans under slavery; it reached millions as a novel and play, and became influential in the United States and United Kingdom. Uncle Tom’s Cabin was about a Christ-like slave named Uncle Tom and an evil slave owner named Simon Legree, who kills Uncle Tom at the end of the book. It energized anti-slavery forces in the American North, while provoking widespread anger in the South. She wrote more than 20 books, including novels, three travel memoirs, and collections of articles and letters. She was influential both for her writings and her public stands on social issues of that time.

8. Sojourner Truth Sojourner Truth is actually not this gals real name. It’s just a name she gave to herself. Her real name is Isabella Baumfree, key part of the name being free. She escaped slavery with her infant son, Peter. She was an amazing speaker that could persuade many people. She gave many lectures, her most famous being Ain’t I a Woman?

9. Results BABY! Abolitionists eventually won the battle against the disgusting practice of slavery. The United States split in two for the Civil War: Union and Confederacy. Eventually, the Civil War ended and slavery was abolished, but segregation would ail this country for many generations, but we would eventually end that too.
