  2. Goals of the Survey • To guide the EGJH-TVSH Technology Committee in formulating a site technology plan • To give all teachers a voice • To establish priorities for the plan • To target funds to areas of greatest need and impact

  3. Choices for Priority Rankings • Computers for student use (lab) • Computers for student use (classroom) • Computers for student use laptop cart • Computers for teacher use • Campus-wide wireless access • Technical support • Software updates • Instructional software • Professional development

  4. EGJH Teachers’ Top 5 Priorities • Computers for student use laptop cart • Computers for teacher use • Professional development • Computers for student use (classroom) • Computers for student use (lab)

  5. TVHS Teachers’ Top 5 Priorities • Computers for teacher use • Computers for student use laptop cart • Computers for student use (classroom) • Computers for student use (lab) • Campus-wide wireless access

  6. Disturbing Data • 4 (EGJH) and 3 (TVHS) teachers are without district-provided workstations • Why are teacher workstations critical? • Take attendance • Record grades • Develop and upload lesson plans and assignments • Share multimedia resources • Communication with students, parents, colleagues, and administration

  7. Challenge of the Data • 9 EGJH teachers are running MACs and 9 are running PCs. • 3 TVHS teachers are running MACs and 10 TVHS teachers are running PCs • What are the challenges? • Potential software incompatibility • Need Office 2007/2008 update for both platforms • Incompatibility with student assignment submissions (EGJH)

  8. Disturbing Data • Tools provided by these outside sources: • Tax credits • JTED • Tanque Verde Education Foundation • PTSG • Grant Funders, such as Qwest • Donations • Teachers using their own equipment

  9. Disturbing Data • Types of Tools Teachers Have Provided with their own funds or outside-of-district funds • Computers • Scientific calculators • LCD projectors • Digital cameras • Digital voice recorders • Speakers • VCR/DVD players • Data collection “clickers”

  10. Challenges of the Data • Teacher Needs • All teacher workstation computers need faster processors and external speakers in order for students to view and hear multimedia in a classroom setting. • Some teachers cannot run or make DVDs on their outdated computers. • Many teachers do not have updated software on their computers because their computers are too outdated to accommodate it.

  11. Challenges of the Data • Only 2 EGJH teachers have interactive whiteboards in their classrooms. • Ten EGJH teachers said they would use whiteboards if they had them. • Seven TVHS teachers have whiteboards. • Five TVHS teachers would use them if the had access in their classrooms.

  12. Tools EGJH Teachers Would Use for Teaching if they had access to them: • Interactive whiteboards (10 teachers) • Scanner (7) • Computers (7) • Digital cameras (6) • Data collection tools (6) • Digital video cameras and editing (5) • TV/VCR/DVD (5) • MP3 Players/iPODs (5) • Printers (3) • Turn It In. com (3) • Document camera (2) • Headphones with microphones (2) • Hand-held PDA - Heart-rate monitors (1)

  13. Tools TVHS Teachers Would Use for Teaching if they had access to them: • Computers (9 teachers) • Interactive whiteboards (5) • Digital video cameras and editing (4/5) • Scanners (5) • TV/VCR/DVD (2) • MP3 Players/iPODs (2) • Digital cameras (1) • LCD projector (1) • Data collection tools (1) • Spectrophotometer (1) • Music keyboards and MIDI labs (1)

  14. EGJH - TVHS Teacher Frustrations: • The library and the lab are the only places in the schools where the entire student population can access computers without restriction. • Computers provided by JTED cannot be used by all students who use his/her classroom

  15. EGJH - TVHS Teacher Frustrations: • 21 out of 32 teachers require students to use computers for learning, but 18 of them do not have computer workstations for student use in their classrooms. • Over half of the respondents would have students use computers in the classroom for 5 or more consecutive days.

  16. Quick Fixes • Wireless in the high school wing3 Airport Base Stations: $477.00 • Headphones with microphones5 at $60/each: $300.00 • Digital voice recorders5 at $60/each: $300.00
