  1. BOSC Program Review Sept. 26 – 28, 2005 Global Change Research Program Ecosystems Focus Area

  2. Why we do what we do How we go about doing it What environmental outcomes we are achieving Organization

  3. NOAA DOS NSF DOE USFS EPA EPA ARS USGS DOD NASA DOT Why Focus on Aquatic Ecosystems?

  4. Why we do what we do How we go about doing it What environmental outcomes we are achieving Organization

  5. LTG: Decision makers will use information and decision tools from the GCRP to protect aquatic ecosystemsby adapting to global change

  6. Applying Our Research Framework: Sacramento River • Stakeholders: identified information needs about priority ecosystem services • Impacts: modeled temperature and flow impacts on water supplies, Chinook salmon • Adaptation: developed options to adapt to water supply shortfalls • Outcomes: results and WEAP tool generated interest and use among more stakeholders See poster “Watersheds: Impacts, Adaptation and Outcomes”

  7. Stakeholder Input Strategic Planning Problem Formulation Watershed & Coral Assessment Biocriteria Assessment Evaluations of Tool Usefulness Long-term Goal Insights Insights Follow-On and New Research and Assessment Needs APG Milestones 2004 2008 2010 2000 2012 Milestones

  8. Why we do what we do How we go about doing it What environmental outcomes we are achieving Organization

  9. Strategic Planning Problem Formulation Watersheds & Corals Biocriteria Tools New Research and Assessment Needs Watersheds: South Florida • Goal - determine effect of climate change on Everglades restoration to inform planning decisions • Outcomes - South Florida Mgt District and other state agencies are using models and information: • In CERP implementation plans • To set performance measures for evaluating CERP impacts • To choose species of concern • To formulate salinity targets for Biscayne Bay See poster “Place-based Impacts Assessments of Global Change on Aquatic Ecosystems”

  10. Strategic Planning Problem Formulation Watersheds & Corals Biocriteria Tools & Methods New Research and Assessment Needs Corals: American Samoa • Goal – assess relative effects of climate change and interacting stressors on coral bleaching and recovery to aid in decision making • Outcomes – provide recommendations to local government that link with their decision opportunities • Improve water quality • Implement monitoring program • Establish MPA network for resilience See poster “Coral Reefs: Impacts, Adaptation and Outcomes”

  11. Strategic Planning Problem Formulation Watersheds & Corals Biocriteria Tools & Methods New Research and Assessment Needs Biocriteria • Goal - determine implications of climate change for specific biological criteria to inform Biocriteria Program Managers • Anticipated outcomes • Managers know the sensitivity of biological criteria to climate change • Program managers have the information they need to select biocriteria that are either insensitive to climate or specifically designed to detect climate change impacts • New Biocriteria Programs are designed taking climate change into account See posters “Supporting Decision Making for Adaptation to Global Change” and “Future Research Directions to Promote Environmental Outcomes”
