What is our role? • To help SQA use ICT more effectively to support delivery and assessment of our qualifications • Three main areas of work: • Automating our processes • Allowing candidates to take our assessments using computers • Providing training to teachers who deliver our qualifications

  3. Projects • Many projects in all three areas and at various stages of development • Two core projects with a direct impact in centres • Pass-IT • Understanding Standards Website

  4. Pass–IT project • Collaborative project • Scottish Executive funding • Built on previous research • Aim was to explore potential of formative & summative e-testing in post-16 education

  5. Subjects & Pilots Pass–IT project • Higher National Certificate - Computing • National Qualification NABs • Mathematics • Chemistry • French • Music • English • Pilots - over 1000 candidates, 28 centres

  8. Next… Pass–IT project • Increasingly offer e-assessment to support SQA qualifications – NQ Mathematics & Computing (2005/6) • Collaborate to develop a national system of e-assessment

  9. The UnderstandingStandards Website Objectives of the website • To make comprehensive and definitive assessment guidelines easily accessible on a dedicated website • To provide online, a structure to allow subject teachers/lecturers to develop their assessment skills

The UnderstandingStandards Website What the website provides: • Explanations and illustrations of the Assessment Principles of the subject • The opportunity to assess candidates’ responses to real assessments • The opportunity to view rich feedback on how the assessment team has judged these same responses

Anticipated benefitsof the website • For teaching staff: Ease of access to definitive assessment guidance, and a source of training materials • For centres: High quality materials for CPD • For SQA: A means of spreading the standards and recruiting and training new markers All of the above contributing to a clearer understanding of what candidates must do to achieve success in a subject

  13. Next … • Continue to add new content and update existing content • Keep up with the technology and try to improve the way in which content is delivered • Actively promote the website and seek the views of users on how it can be improved

Role of theCentre Co-ordinator • Access to the website is password-protected • Profiles have been created for LEAs, Independent Schools and Further Education. • Details were sent to SQA Co-ordinators in February 2005 • Promotional material will direct teaching staff to their SQA Co-ordinator for access details
