  1. Titration A review

  2. The First Step • Balance the Reaction Equation • HCl + NaOH  ?? • Acid and Base form Salt and Water • HCl + NaOH  H2O + NaCl • Neutralize the Salt • Balance the Equation

  3. Example: • Sulfurous Acid and Iron (III) hydroxide • H for Acid, SO32- for Sulfurous • Fe 3+ for iron and OH- for hydroxide • H2SO3 + Fe(OH)3

  4. Balanced • Form H2O and Fe and SO3 • Fe 3+ andSO32- • Fe2(SO3)3 • H2SO3 + Fe(OH)3  H2O + Fe2(SO3)3 • 3H2SO3 + 2Fe(OH)3  • 6 H2O + Fe2(SO3)3

  5. Find the molar ratio • To find the molar ratio you need to look at your balanced equation.

  6. Calculating Titration Problems • Volume of standard solution times • Molarity of the Standard solution • Gives you moles of Standard. • VxM=moles standard

  7. Calculations continued • Moles Standard times molar ratio • Gives moles of unknown • Moles standard x ratio of unknown • ratio of standard

  8. Calculations • Moles of Unknown divided by volume of sample titrated gives Molarity of Unknown. • Moles sample/volume of sample=M

  9. Shortcut?!?

  10. Still need a balanced equation!! • ?MaVa=?MbVb • How many H’s? • How many OH’s? • #H’sMaVa=#OH’sMbVb

  11. Try one! • If you Titrate 10 ml of aluminum hydroxide with 16.3 ml of 0.1 M Sulfuric Acid, What is the concentration of the base?
