  2. Debate Defined- More than just arguing • The process of examining an issue or question by looking at both sides and weighing evidence on each to solve problems, to establish truth or validity, and to understand opposing viewpoints.

  4. What Is Debate? • Complex-many facets involved • There are rules established to ensure that both sides have equal opportunity to present positions that are backed by some type of evidence and logical analysis.

  5. Roots of Debate-Ancient Greece • Protagoras-”father of debate”-argued pros and cons of issues in Greek society • “sophistry”-arguments defective in subtle ways • More concerned with delivery/audience effect than truth

  6. Aristotle • Stressed truth in arguments-persuasion • Logos-logic/evidence • Ethos-speaker credibility • Pathos-emotional appeals
