  1. Debate Look at the topic you have been given on your card. You have 5 mins to debate this topic. One of you must argue FOR, one of you must argue AGAINST End

  2. LO: To understand how writers use language devices to present an argument. Language Devices By the end of the lesson you will have: SOME will be able to explain the effect of language devices in an article and how they impact on the reader (L6+) MOST will be able to quote language devices and explain what they mean (L6) ALL will be able to identify language devices in an article (L5)

  3. Read the article Worry Word Wall What words are you unsure of?

  4. Identifying language devices On your article highlight/underline any language devices and label them On your sheet start to explain what the writer means by using these devices If you are stuck…look for these: Paragraph 1 – Rhetorical Question Paragraph 2 – Statistic Paragraph 3 – Sarcasm Paragraph 4 – Hyperbole

  5. WAGOLL – What a good one looks likeGive it a mark… In the article, the writer uses statistics when she says “5,000-or-so professional footballers”. By using numbers here, the writer makes the article seem more reliable because she backs up her argument with figures. Also, this is a very big number which has been made into an approximate. This also emphasises just how many footballers there are and how many of them may not have “come out publically as gay”.

  6. Now write your own paragraphs… In the article… When the writer says… This suggests/shows/implies… This emphasises… Also, this shows… This makes the reader think…
