  3. WORK LIFE BALANCE We all have so many commitments these days that we can feel at times we're getting ripped in a million different directions. What to do? Take control now by achieving balance between your work and personal lives.

WORKLIFEBALANCE WORK LIFE BALANCE is… • The expression "work-life balance" was first used in the late 1970s to describe the balance between an individual's work and personal life. • achieved when an individual’s right to a fulfilled life inside and outside paid work is accepted and respected as the norm, to the mutual benefit of the individual, business, and society.

The search for work-life balance is a processin which people seek to change things in accordancewith changes in their own priorities, physical,psychological or both, and these can be triggered in their turn by factors such as: age; changes in workingconditions; the demands of new technology; andpoor management. • The ability to effectively manage the juggling act between paid work • and the other activities that are important to -people. • – Family/Friends • – Recreation • – Spiritual • – Health and Wellness

Consequences of Work-Life Balance Struggles • Work-life balance struggles can diminish your overall happiness and well-being and negatively impact your life in far-reaching ways. • Adverse health consequences, such as stress-related illnesses, can result when you are chronically tense or upset. • situational factors pose challenges to your efforts to create the work-life balance you want. • Many people are caught in the middle of inner conflicts that make it hard for them to make changes to create the healthier and happier balance they would like.

  8. CONT…………. • Overworked and overstressed employees are more likely to get sick and have high absentee rates. • A lack of work/life balance affects an employee’s attitude. Unhappy workers are typically less efficient and can destroy morale. • Burnout directly affects turnover rates. Employees can work at a frantic pace for only so long before they get frustrated and leave a company.

CONT……… • Women still take prime responsibility for caring and domestic work; women’s employment patterns remain much more affected than men’s by the need to care for children or others. • Work-life balance is dependent on a mixture of state polices, individual circumstances and cultural factors. These include norms and assumptions particularly in relation to gender roles and the domestic division of labour. • Parents on a low income, especially those with few employment options and restricted resources, have particular difficulties with ‘work-life balance’

Companies have started implementing flexible work options like: • Childcare • Wellness programs • Financial planning • These work/life benefits encourage employees to be more productive and committed to the company, and they make your company more competitive when recruiting new candidates.

Employers help in their employees to manage workloads Keeping work hold realistic: schedule time accurately, manage resources wisely,priortise tasks ,say no to projects that could overload them. Remove interruptions: free periods during the work results in increased productivity and a less stressful work environment.
