Objectives • Reflect upon the benefits of working with REGARDS to consider the reasons why Equality and Diversity are so important for educational, social and personal, legal and for employers • focus upon prevalent stereotypes in todays culture and how they can underpin many biased learner comments • develop ‘holding statements’ that can be used by tutors and staff when managing difficult conversations

Ground Rules activity Please add to this list…… • Consider this environment as one where it is ‘blame free’ - a chance to voice your thoughts • The goal is not to agree – it is about listening and considering • Be aware of body language • Speak from own experience and say ‘I’ and not ‘we’ • Challenge one another by asking questions but focus on the ideas not the person • Participate to the fullest of your ability • Share your ideas and experiences • Respect confidentiality of the discussions

  7. Task 3 Managing difficult conversations Inpairs or tables • 10-15 minutes • Very quickly try to respond to the remarks • Use the cards if you need to • After 10 mins rank your responses – one that you are most happy with • Be prepared to share your best answer with the whole group
