  1. Unalakleet Airport Paving Temporary Runway Centerline Stripe

  2. Temporary runway stripe overview: • The Department recognized a need to improve positive guidance to pilots during partial closures of runways under construction. • The Unalakleet Airport Paving project utilized a temporary runway centerline stripe on the half-width crushed aggregate surface. • This was very well received by the users. We recommend use of a temporary runway centerline stripe on all applicable projects.

  3. The Unalakleet Airport serves as a regional hub for the Eastern Norton Sound. A temporary centerline stripe was painted on the 75’ wide half-width aggregate surface added by change order.

  4. There were approximately one jet, five turbo props and thirty small engine plane landings a day. The stripe lasted about a week, with the jet traffic being the limiting factor. Temporary stripe life would be much longer in the absence of jet traffic.

  5. The total 2008 temporary stripe cost was $ 30K; which is similar to the costs of temporary stripes on highway projects. Bid prices would be expected to be lower than the change order price.

  6. The striping was done with a walk-behind paint machine using oil based white paint (22W-D010-C08-White Acrylic Low Voc Zone Marking Paint) at an approximate spread rate of 10-15 gallons per centerline stripe (120’ – skip 80’ – 12 inch width).

  7. Sample of paint used.

  8. The surveying and striping work took approximately 2-3 hours each stripe and re-stripe.

  9. The users expressed delight in the Department’s efforts. It took the guess work out of determining where they needed to land. They easily saw the stripe from above and knew where to land safely. No incidents were reported.

  10. We highly recommend that a Temporary Runway Centerline Stripe be added to all Future aviation projects where applicable.
