England vs. Spain • King Philip II (Catholic Spanish king) hated Queen Elizabeth (Protestant English queen) • Sir Francis Drake – attacked Spanish ports and was knighted for his efforts • 1588 – the defeat of the Spanish Armada • Signaled the end of Spanish sea dominance • Opened the route for England to the Americas

Roanke…? • Sir Humphrey Gilbert – officially claimed Newfoundland for the British • Sir Walter Raleigh – sent by the Queen to explore the Americas • Attempted to settle on Roanoke Island (off NC) • John White – mapmaker on the second trip with Raleigh, father of the first English child born in America (Virginia Dare) • Traveled back to England for supplies • War with Spain delayed return • Upon return, Roanoke was deserted (only “Croatoan”)

Jamestown • Charters – the rights to organize settlements in an area • King James I – King of England in 1606 • The Virginia Company • Joint-Stock Company – company in which investors bought stock, or partial ownership, in the company for a share of future profits • 3 ships entered the Chesapeake Bay and founded a city named Jamestown • Mosquitos, bad farm land, and lack of immediate wealth • Of 144 settlers, 38 were left within 2 years

  7. “I’m Kind of a Big Deal…” • Captain John Smith – governor of Jamestown for the first 2 years • Established hard work, peaceful relationships with the Native Americans (Chief Powhatan) • Left after two years when a new group came • Winter of 1609-1610 = “the starving time” • John Rolfe – learned to grow tobacco • Pocahontas – daughter of Chief Powhatan, married John Rolfe • Headright– the company’s land grant • 50 Acres for each family member over 15 years old

King and A Kingdom • Burgesses – two representatives from each colony sent to the company • House of Burgesses – (July 30, 1619) the assembly that had the right to make laws for the colonies • 90 Women and 20 Africans came in 1619 • Servants – engaged in work for a set time period • William Tucker – first African American; free • Slavery in Virginia law in 1660 • 1624 – King James cancels the charter for the company and states Jamestown as the first official English colony in America
