Historical Background • In 1947 U.N. passed resolution for separate Jewish and Palestinian states. • In 1948 Israel was born. • Between Muslim Palestinians and Jewish Israelis. • Jews and Muslims have inhabited Palestine for centuries. • Palestinians use terrorism against Israelis. • Israelis retaliate for attacks by Palestinians.

  3. Historical Background This is the aftermath of a Palestinian suicide bombing of a nightclub. Ever since late 2000, suicide bombings against Israeli civilians and soldiers have become commonplace.

  4. Historical Background This map shows the areas under Israeli and Palestinian control. The areas shown as occupied by Israel are supposed to be under Palestinian control but Israel can go in those area at any time. Since late 2000, the Palestinian authority has become much weaker.

  5. Historical Context • This conflict started in the 1940’s. • Israel was born in 1948. • World War II took place. • The Holocaust by Nazi Germany happened. • India gained it’s independence. • Communist China was born.

Causes • Jews lived in Palestine but were kicked out by invaders. • During World War I, Jews and Arabs lived in Palestine. • The Jews wanted their own homeland. • Zionism became popular after the Holocaust. • After World War II, Jews migrated into Palestine. • When Israel was born, Arab countries attacked it.

  9. Causes This is a pictures of shoes of Holocaust victims. The great suffering of the Jews during the Holocaust fueled the fires of Zionism. This was the most important factor in the creation of Israel in 1948.

  10. Causes This is a map showing the growth of the Jewish population in Palestine before the creation of Israel.

Effects (Short Term) • Britian ruled Palestine when Jews migrated there. • Immigration was limited and angry Jews terrorized Britian. • The United Nations created Israel and Arab countries attacked it. • Palestinians fearing Jewish rule fled. • There are still many refugees and camps. • The United Nations negotiated a cease-fire which failed.

  12. Effects (Short Term) A Palestinian refugee camp created shortly after the birth of Israel in 1948. Palestinian refugees are fleeing to neighboring Arab countries after the state of Israel was created.

  13. Effects (Short Term) This is a political cartoon showing how the Israelis have confined Yasser Arafat but they too are locked in a never ending conflict.

Significance in History • One of the longest running conflicts ever. • Arab countries hate Israel and dislike the United States. • This conflict could escalate into world war. • This conflict is tied with the Holocaust. • Muslim extremists justify 9/11 attacks by citing U.S support for Israel. • If Arabs stop selling oil to the West, disastrous effects will result.

  15. Significance in History This picture shows Arabs burning the U.S flag. Arabs are angry at the U.S for supporting Israel.

  16. Significance in History Muslim-Arab extremists justify the 9/11 terrorist attacks by citing U.S support for Israel. Continuing U.S support for Israel could result in further terrorist attacks against the United States.

  17. Rights and Responsibilities • Palestinians cannot live in peace or dignity. • Israelis live in fear of suicide bombings. • Rights of both sides are being violated. • Nations aren’t being responsible in solving this conflict. • The big powers aren’t exercising their responsibilities fully. • Suicide bombings and Israeli retaliation are in a never ending cycle.

  18. Rights and Responsibilities This graph shows the views of Israelis and Palestinians regarding their attitudes regarding peace.

  19. Rights and Responsibilities Yasser Arafat of the Palestinian Authority, King Hussein I of Jordan, and Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu meet with President Clinton in the White House. Palestinians search the rubble of a building destroyed by an Israeli air strike. This was in revenge for a Palestinian suicide bombing done earlier.
