  5. Reader’s Workshop:Minilesson • Direct instruction of reading strategy and skill • Teacher will model skills • Students utilize independent reading book to practice strategy

  7. Reader’s Workshop: Interactive read aloud Students listen to fluent reading and watch as teacher models skills and strategies within the unit of study. Students will deepen vocabulary skills and comprehension of high level texts. Students will be active participants in the read aloud. They will be asked discuss topics, debate with peers and complete short writing tasks.

  9. Reader’s Workshop:Reading Materials • Each child has been provided with an expandable folder. In this folder the students keep their Reader’s Notebook, reading log and word study words/packet. This folder should be bought home each day and returned to school.

  10. Reader’s Workshop:Benchmarking The students will be benchmarked in order to identify their levels for independent reading and instructional reading. This will lead to children reading what they “can” read and comprehend independently. Teacher’s guidance through small group instruction will help the child reach the next level.

  11. Reading.. Just Right books I will begin Benchmarking each student next week to find their reading level. Books that students read for independent reading must be on their reading level Students become better readers by reading a lot of books! The more they read the better reader they will become!

  12. Word work: Word Study word patterns, categorizing based on patterns

  14. Word work • May Do’s • Choose two related words and illustrate the relationship between those words • Use a dictionary to get some background information on one unfamiliar word. Record your learning in your notebook • Talk to a partner or group. Discuss the following questions: What do you notice about these words? How are they similar? Why did you sort them to way you did? • Write one sentence about each pattern between the column • Choose 2-3 words from this week’s sort and combine them into one sentence that makes sense • Underline root words and circle any affixes (prefixes or suffixes)

  15. Writer’s worshop: Units of study • Crafting True Stories • The Art of Information Writing • Baby Literacy Essay • Changing the World: Persuasive Speeches, Petitions and Editorials • Once Upon a Time: Adapting and Writing Fairy Tales

Writer’s Workshop • Mini-Lesson: a short lesson focused on the writing skill for the day • Writing Time: They write while I conference with individuals or small groups. • Sharing: Writers read what they have written and seek feedback from their audience. • All students have a Writer’s Notebook. The notebook is used for prewriting/note-taking/brainstorming strategies

  17. Home learning • Please check your child’s Home Learning Agenda for daily assignments. Home Learning is assigned Monday- Thursday • On a typical day the students will be asked to read for 20 minutes and complete a fluency choice board assignment for Math

  18. Special’s Schedule: 3P Monday: Media Tuesday: World Language & Gym Wednesday: Music Thursday: Art & Computers Friday: Gym

  19. Field Trips &Class Parties • Parent Volunteer are needed to help out at parties and join us on our field trip. Sign up sheet with exact dates with be send home soon. • Four parties: Halloween, Winter Festival, Spring Fling, and End of the Year • Have craft, book, game
