  1. Breeding for cooking quality with drought tolerance in rice by using Marker Assistant Selection By Heang Dany and Then Rathmuny Cambodian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI)

  2. Background • 12 millions total population with 181035 km2 and around 80% of people are located in the rural side • Around 40% of GDP were from agriculture annually and half of them were from rice. • The total of cultivated areas of rice are 2,137,125 ha, which wet season is 1,845,135 ha and around 86% of this area are called rainfed lowland.

  3. Background • We have been work a lot since 1986 with collaboration with CIAP (Cambodia-Irri-Australia Project) and achieved in releasing 35 rice varieties in different rice ecosystem for Cambodian farmers there are: 9 early, 5 medium for irrigation (photoperiod insensitive), 8 medium, 11 late (photoperiod sensitive) and 2 upland rice

  4. Background

  5. Statement problems • Drought is a major problem in Rainfed lowland rice in Cambodia that can cause yield loss in rice dramatically up to 50% or more. Since we are covered by 86% of rainfed lowland so drought tolerance would be a subject to be improved with good grain quality of rice as well. • People always need much quality with good quality • Ex in 2003 drought damage around 142 480 ha by early drought in the season….

  6. Objective • To improve grain quality with tolerance to drought for rice

  7. Selecting Donor and Recipient • Donor: Phkar Rum Duol: • Release year: 1999 • Medium: 30 Oct-7 Nov. • Grain length: 7.5, width: 2.1. Ration L/W: 3.6 • Amylose content: 23.4% • Gelatinization temperature: Low • Gel consistency: 81 mm • Aroma (scent): scent/soft texture

  8. Phka Rum Duol

  9. Selecting Donor and Recipient • Recipient: CAR3, drought by DRI: 0.43 • Release year: 1995 • Medium: 30 Oct-7 Nov. • Grain length: 6.4, width: 2.2, Ration L/W: 2.9 • Amylose content: 21.3% • Gelatinization temperature: Low/intermidate • Gel consistency: 60 mm
