Confucianism • Based on the principles of Confucius • Lived from 551-479 BC. • Aspired to be a political advisor. • Confucius lived during a time of warfare. • Very violent time for all people. • Confucius was concerned about the social instability and lack of order. • He tried to convince political leaders to make changes.

Confucianism • Not a religion. • Based on a system of social and ethical philosophy, not spiritual. • “only when character is cultivated are our families regulated; only when families are regulated are states well governed.” • Confucius believed that humans are social creatures that are capable of goodness. • Emphasis on the “Superior Person”. • The individual who has trained himself to do what is socially demanded.

Confucianism • A person must develop their “Jen” in order to be a “Superior Person”. • “The sincerity on the inside shows on the outside”. • Filial Piety • Means to love, respect, and take care of your parents. • Hierarch is a fundamental principle in Confucianism. • Confucius wanted society to return to the old traditional ways of Zhou Dynasty.

Taoism • Originated during the same time as Confucianism. • History is unclear. • Beginning is linked to Lao Tzu, who may not have existed. • The myth of Lao Tzu • Conceived by a shooting star. • At his birth, he was already 82 years old. • Political activist. • Wrote down his words of wisdom in the Tai Te Ching.

Taoism • The Tao Ti Ching • Several teachings of living in harmony with nature. • “Those who know do not speak; Those who speak do not know.” • The Philosophy of Tao • Both the ultimate source and principle of order on the universe. • Moral values are relative and avoids absolute moral judgments. • No afterlife, death is a transformation from one life to the next. • Humans are in harmony with nature.
